Season for Giving: Oasis donations give relief to customers in crisis

The holiday season is fast approaching. This time of year, we are reminded just how good it feels to give – usually in the form of presents to friends and family.

In the midst of your holiday shopping, take a moment to consider giving a different kind of gift this year. A donation to Cary ’s Oasis program is a gift your neighbors can use all year long.

Through Oasis, you can help utility customers who are facing financial hardship get back on their feet. Donations are used to pay utility bills or for plumbing repairs to fix leaks.

We’ve partnered with Christian Community in Action, a local non-profit organization, to administer the program. You can make a one-time donation or contribute monthly with your utility payment. Donations are tax deductible.

For more information about Cary ’s Oasis program, visit www.townofcary.org.

Riverwalk Receives Cary’s First NIP Grant

We are pleased to announce that the Riverwalk Homeowners Association is the first neighborhood organization to receive our Neighborhood Improvement Program grant.

The association used the grant to spruce up their subdivision’s entry on Lake Pine Drive . New stone columns and lighting fixtures were installed and a wrought iron fence was added to the entry. Riverwalk residents put in more than 130 hours of volunteer labor.

Our Neighborhood Grant Improvement Program awards small matching grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 for improvement projects such as tree planting, new signs and playgrounds to qualified organizations. Riverwalk’s project was approved in April and completed on Sept. 28. The project, which totaled $14,764, was awarded a $5,000 matching grant.

Grant applications are accepted throughout the year. To learn more, visit www.townofcary.org or call (919) 380-5991.

There’s still time to apply to serve on one of the Town’s nine boards and commissions. We’re accepting applications through Dec. 1.

Traffic Light Out? Don’t Dial 911

A traffic signal that is not working properly can cause reasonable concern for drivers and pedestrians alike. However, you should not call 911 to report signal problems.

To notify the Town of a malfunctioning traffic light, call us at (919) 469-4090. After hours and on weekends and holidays, call (919) 469-4012. We maintain all traffic signals in Cary and Morrisville, and a portion of the traffic signals in Apex.

Remember, 911 is the number to call for emergencies. Calls to 911 should be made only when there is a need for immediate public safety assistance, such as serious medical emergencies, fires, crimes in progress, and other life threatening situations.

What's a Shut-off Valve?

If a pipe bursts anywhere in your home - kitchen, bath or basement - your master shut-off valve can turn it off. It is where the water line comes into your house from the street.

Find your home’s valve now and be sure everyone in your household knows where it is and what it does. For more tips, call (919) 469-4090.

Heating Tips for Cooler Temps

As the weather cools down, we know you will be firing up your heaters to stay warm and cozy. But heating systems can start fires if they are not used and maintained properly. Follow a few simple safety precautions to keep your family safe during cooler weather:

Check baseboard heaters often to remove objects that have fallen on top of or near the heater.

Always turn portable heaters off when you leave the room or go to sleep.

Only burn dry, seasoned wood, never rubbish. Garbage and green wood can cause a chimney fire.

Have your chimney inspected and serviced before each heating season.

For more fire prevention tips, visit www.townofcary.org or call (919) 460-4958.

Trash Collection Change

Town government offices will be closed on Monday, Dec. 25 and Tuesday, Dec. 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday.

Solid waste and recycling will be picked up on regular collection days. However, during the week of Dec. 25, yard waste will not be collected. Instead, Town crews will collect your excess holiday trash.

  Questions? Call (919) 469-4090.

Reducing Extra Holiday Trash

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, one million extra tons of waste is generated nationwide each week. Do your part to reduce excess trash by looking for gifts that are made with recycled materials, are reusable or are not over-packaged. Donate unwanted gifts to charity.
