Ready to Roll: Customers Receive Carts for Curbside Collection

Our transition from backyard garbage collection to curbside pick-up is now underway.

We have started delivering rollout carts to customers, a process that will take us eight weeks to complete. Your cart will arrive on your normal garbage collection day.

We’ll place a hanger on your garbage can the week before your rollout cart is delivered. Once you receive your cart, you will begin rolling your garbage to the curb the next week.

Everyone’s collection day for solid waste and recycling will stay the same. Yard waste will be collected that day also, instead of on Mondays.

You may want to consider using your current garbage can for yard waste. Unwanted garbage cans should be placed at the curb on collection day with a sign letting crews know to remove it.

Existing town home and condominium customers with three or more units to the building will not receive a rollout cart. You will continue to receive backyard collection.

More details on curbside collection will be provided in each BUD through April 2006.

No Parking in Fire Lanes

The Cary Fire Department has received several complaints about citizens illegally parking cars in designated fire lanes.

The fire lane is an important part of a building’s fire protection system. It gives firefighters access to hydrants and sprinkler connections and allows them to properly position themselves during a fire.

When someone is injured or ill, emergency crews use fire lanes to get to patients immediately - when seconds count.

Parking in a fire lane is a violation of the Town’s ordinance. Those who park in fire lanes illegally could find themselves paying a ticket or a towing charge.

Volunteers Sought for Boards and Commissions

If you’ve ever wanted to get involved with Town government, now is the time.

The Town of Cary is seeking community-minded citizens to fill vacancies on the Town's nine volunteer boards and commissions.

Applications are being accepted now through Dec.1, 2005. Service on the board will begin on Feb. 1, 2006 , with terms ranging from one to three years.

Members will be selected from within Cary’s corporate limits and its extraterritorial jurisdiction, depending on the board.

Citizens interested in applying should visit the Town’s web site at www.townofcary.org/boards/boards.htm to learn more and fill out an online application.

It is a good idea to confirm that your application was received after you submit it electronically. To check the status of your application or ask questions, contact the Town Clerk's office via e-mail at karen.gray@townofcary.org or call (919) 319-4508.

Winterize Irrigation Systems

Automatic irrigation systems should be winterized by now.

Avoid costly repairs and excessive water bills by draining water from your system to prevent frozen water from cracking the lines and heads. Then, either remove or insulate the backflow preventor and other exposed pipes.

Shop Safely This Season

The Cary Police Department is encouraging citizens to keep safety in mind while shopping this season.

Remember to park your vehicle in a well-lighted area.

Leave valuables in a locked trunk and out of sight. Lock your car even when it is parked at home.

If traveling out of town, have a neighbor watch your house.  It is also a good idea to put some of your home’s lights on a timer.

Practice these tips for safe Internet shopping:

Never give credit card information to a vender on a non-secure site.

If you have a wireless connection, make sure it is secure and cannot be used by others.

Call your credit card company. Many companies now offer web fraud protection.

Read your credit card statements and report discrepancies to the company immediately.

For more tips, call the Cary Police at (919) 469-4012.
