Conserving Our Resources

Wake County is under a severe drought advisory. Please continue to conserve water and follow the Town’s ordinances.

Alternate day watering is in effect year-round. Customers with odd-number addresses can water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Those with even-number addresses can do so on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Watering by hand is allowed any day of the week.

You can track your household’s use of water through our Utility Billing Online service or you can call the Water Wise Hotline at (919) 469-4090 Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to discuss your water consumption.

The Town’s Water Conservation Plan calls for reducing the average per capita use by 20 percent by 2015. The Beat the Peak 2006 campaign, Conservation³, will encourage citizens to triple their efforts to conserve water. For more information, call (919) 469-4090.

Tips for Recycling Paint Cans

Spring is a popular time to paint in and around the house. Residents can properly dispose of unwanted latex paint by following these guidelines:

If there is less than 2 inches of paint in the can, dry it out by setting it in the sun for several hours. Paint must be completely dry before calling the Department of Public Works and Utilities to request collection or before dropping cans off at the Convenience Center at 313 N. Dixon Avenue .

Remember to set the can out at the curb by 7 a.m. if you have requested collection. The lid must be off the paint can.

If you have more than 2 inches of paint, properly dispose of it as household hazardous waste. Oil based paint is also considered household hazardous waste and will not be collected by Public Works or accepted at the Citizen Convenience Center.

Call (919) 469-4090 for more information.

A Helping Hand in Difficult Times

Oasis is a program that helps those who find themselves in financial hardship with their Town of Cary utility bill.

The program is administered through a partnership between the Town and Christian Community in Action, a local non-profit organization. CCA decides who qualifies for assistance and how much help they receive with their utility expenses. The money can only be used for a Town of Cary utility bill or plumbing repairs to fix leaks.

Call Christian Community in Action at (919) 469-9861 if you need help with your utility bill.

Smoke Detectors Save Lives – When They Work

A working smoke alarm can mean the difference between life and death. Smoke alarms are designed to wake you up in the event a fire starts in your home. If a smoke alarm is working, it will provide the necessary warning and the time needed to escape from your home and away from the fire.

In North Carolina , a landlord is responsible for providing and installing a working smoke alarm in your apartment when you move in. Maintaining that smoke alarm is your responsibility.

A smoke alarm can only protect you if it is working. By maintaining smoke alarms, you can cut your risk of dying in a home fire by as much as half.

Make certain your smoke alarms work when you need them. Follow these steps:

Install smoke alarms near all of the sleeping areas in the home. Smoke alarms are designed for one function: to wake people up in the event of a fire during the night.

Check smoke alarms on a regular basis to make certain they still work. Although smoke alarms are in 92 percent of American homes, nearly one-third do not work because of worn or missing batteries.

Change your smoke alarm's batteries once a year. Changing these batteries once a year is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce your risk of suffering a death or injury from a fire in your home.

For more information about fire prevention, call the Cary Fire Department at (919) 460-4958.

Dialing 911 on the Go

Whether you are on the road or calling from home, it is important to remember that 911 is always the number to dial when you have an emergency.

In the past, some citizens have dialed *CP (*27) from their mobile phone to reach Cary 911 operators. This service is no longer available on all wireless networks.

During an emergency, every moment counts—don’t waste time trying to remember other numbers. 911 is always the number of choice.
