Saving Dough on H20 – Promoting Efficient Use of a Precious Resource

Water use rises in summer, so it’s a good time to emphasize conservation.

Our water conservation section in the Current Projects & Initiatives section of townofcary.org explains watering rules and has lots of advice for saving water indoors and outdoors.

The Alternate Day Watering ordinance is in effect year-round. Customers with odd-number addresses can water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.  Those with even-number addresses can do so on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Watering by hand is allowed any day of the week.

Check your automatic irrigation system for leaks. And remember, all systems must have a rain sensor so they don’t automatically - and wastefully - irrigate after an adequate rainfall.

Please help us reduce the spikes in usage from summertime irrigation. You’ll save on your utility bill and help delay the need for costly water system expansion.

For more information, call (919) 469-4090.

3 Days of Today Cary Backdrop for NBC Interview

Cary played host to cast and crew members of NBC’s TODAY show for three days in April. They were here to tape a segment with Olympic athlete Marion Jones.

TODAY host Katie Couric met up with an 11-member crew who had arrived in Cary on a Monday to begin their multi-location shoot. The main gallery of historic Page-Walker Arts & History Center was used for the interview, which featured Couric talking at length with Jones.

The center front lawn was used for casual shots of Couric with Jones and Jones’ 9-month-old son. NBC also shot footage of Jones’ practice session at Cary Academy .

Cool Spring Cleanups

State and Town laws restrict open burning to guard against the spread of fire and to preserve air quality.

Homeowners in Cary are not allowed to burn leaves and other yard debris, however.

Our waste collection services provide a safe, clean alternative that lets us prohibit  homeowners’ leaf fires. Besides, few houses in Cary would be far enough from woods and  neighboring homes to meet permit restrictions even if the prohibition were not in effect.

Our risk management inspectors issue burning permits for commercial land clearing. There are restrictions on what can be burned, when, where, and how much. Construction crews must closely monitor the fires or permits will be revoked.

To learn more, call the Fire Department at (919) 469-4056.

For details on yard waste collection, see Leaf Collection under Current Projects online or call  (919) 469-4090.

Giving Without Getting Taken

Fraudulent fund-raisers and other scam artists rarely meet with their victims, preferring the telephone, mail, and Internet.

They often target the elderly and manipulate a person's vulnerability and kindness.

Ask how your money will be used and what percentage will go to programs versus administrative and fund-raising costs.

Request written information with the full name, address, and phone numbers of the organization and a description of the programs it supports.

Check out any charity you don't know with the local charity registration office, Better Business Bureau, or watchdog group.

Don't give in to high pressure or emotional appeals that urge donations on the spot. If you are unsure, don't be afraid to turn down the solicitation or ask for more information or time.

Don't be fooled by names that closely resemble a respected  charity. Make sure you know with whom you are dealing.

For more advice, call Cary police at (919) 469-4324.

Caller ID’d

Don’t believe your caller ID if it shows a 704 area code and identifies the call as the Cary Fire Department.  It’s a private company soliciting money for a firefighters union.

We provide the resources necessary to get the job done. So when considering donations, be sure you do so knowing that the money is neither requested nor used by your Town government.

Call (919) 469-4007 if you have questions.

Making Good Neighbors

To promote orderly planning, Cary has utility service agreements with several municipalities.

State law recognizes such boundary agreements, which promote efficient extension of water and sewer service, police and fire protection, etc.

The boundaries help avoid conflict and confusion over which town might annex an area. No annexation occurs automatically, however. The boundary does not necessarily mean that a town can, or will, annex all land on its side.

Cary has agreements with Holly Springs , Raleigh and Durham . Expansion of an agreement with Apex is under consideration.

Read more about utility service agreements in the Current Projects section of our Web site.
