The Great Outdoors - The Amphitheatre at
Regency Park

Norah Jones, voted Best New Artist at this years’ Grammy Awards. Music legend Bob Dylan. Ben Harper, Joe Cocker, and as always, the N.C. Symphony.

This year’s concert lineup in The Amphitheatre at Regency Park is the best yet with something for every musical taste. And SMG, which manages the amphitheatre for us, continues to add shows. By the time you read this, there will probably be more.

The amphitheatre blends state-of-the-art performance technology with the beauty of Symphony Lake .

The symphony’s annual Summerfest Concert Series with conductors William Henry Curry and Jeffrey Pollock runs Saturday evenings from May 31 until mid-July. Bring a picnic basket and spread a blanket. The symphony will also play at the Town’s free concert and fireworks on Friday, July 4.

For schedules, tickets and other information, see Amphitheatre at Regency Park in the Recreation section of townofcary.org or call SMG at (919) 462-2025. Box office hours at Regency are weekdays, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

We hope to see you lakeside.

Catapulting canines, footloose felines

Canine Frisbee Disc Competition - Saturday, June 7 at Bond Park.

See the fur fly at Bond Park as dogs vie for a chance to compete in the World Canine Frisbee Disc Championships.

All dogs, including mutts and novice disc chasers, can give it a shot. No dog goes home empty-mouthed. Each competing canine receives a free official disc (while supplies last, at least) and a certificate. The time is 10 a.m. with registration at 9:30 a.m.

The top three competitors earn prizes. Winners qualify for regional competition Call (919) 469-4100 for more information.

Human and canine spectators are welcome. Dogs must be on a leash when not competing.

Speaking of leashes

The Town’s leash law applies to cats as well as dogs. All dogs and cats must be on a leash when off their owner's property.

Preserve the peace on your street by not letting your dog or cat run loose out of the yard.

Your neighbors don’t enjoy seeing your hairy hunter eat their birds and bunnies.

For more information, call Animal Control at (919) 319-4517.

Trash Stash

This time of year, we get more reports that we’ve emptied garbage cans of things you didn’t intend to throw away.

We don’t want that to happen. So it’s better not to store gardening tools, pet food or other “keepers” in garbage containers outdoors.

It also helps if you set garbage in the same spot each week. As always, call (919) 469-4090 if you have questions.

Bonding Action
Staying Connected after the Vote

Cary voters said “yes” on April 8 to $130 million in bonds for streets and $30 million in bonds for recreation projects.

But that doesn’t mean the time for public participation in these issues has passed.

With citizens’ permission to use this special type of debt financing, the Town Council will decide what projects to move forward each year during budget deliberations. So stay involved and attend public hearings on the budget each June.

Read more about potential projects in the Budget section under Site Index on the Web site.

Bud Bits

Town offices will be closed Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day. Yard waste will not be gathered that week. However, crews will collect household garbage, recyclables and curbside trash on the normal schedule.

When holidays approach, check the Holiday Schedule pages under Site Index  on the Web site. They tell you when garbage, recycling and curbside trash will be picked up that week. Yard waste is not collected during holiday weeks.

Recycle cleaners, pesticides, paints, used motor oil and other household hazardous wastes on the third Saturday of each month at the Solid Waste Transfer Station, 6000 Old Smithfield Road off N.C. 55 south of Apex. Hours are 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Call (919) 287-8051.

Camping Gear - Putting Fire in Park

Fire can do wonderful things to hot dogs and marshmallows, just don’t turn your back on it.

Here are some safe camping tips from Cary firefighters:

Choose tents of flame-retardant material and pitch them well away from your campfire.

Build your campfire downwind, clearing away all dry vegetation and digging a pit surrounded by rocks. Look for signs that warn of potential fire hazards in national forests and campgrounds.

Pour water over or cover the fire with dirt before going to sleep or leaving the campsite.

Use only flashlights or battery-powered lanterns inside the tent or any other closed space instead of liquid-fuel lanterns or heaters. In addition to being a fire hazard, the fuel can easily cause a carbon monoxide buildup.

Store liquid fire starter - NEVER use gasoline— away from your tent and campfire. Use only dry kindling to freshen a campfire. Don’t use liquid fuel.

For more information  on summer fire safety call the Fire Department at (919) 460-4958.

by the way

Recycling Tip: Did you know that motor oil never wears out? It just gets dirty. Oil can be recycled, re-refined and used again and again. That helps to reduce our reliance on imported oil. The Town of Cary offers free curbside pick up of used motor oil for solid waste customers. To schedule a used oil pick-up in Cary , call the Public Works and Utilities customer service line at (919) 469-4090.

Water Conservation Tip: The Town has a tiered utility rate structure to encourage customers to use water efficiently.  If your utility bill shows use in the "penalty tier," please call the Public Works and Utilities Department at (919) 469-4090 for suggestions on how to reduce your consumption and save money.
