Guiding
Spanish-speaking newcomers to Cary servicios The Town’s popular Citizen’s Guide to Services is now bilingual, reflecting the growing diversity of Cary. A Spanish version of the Guide, Guía Ciudadana de Servicios, has been produced to help those who live and work here, but have not yet learned English. "As our community becomes more diverse, we continue to look for new ways to put all of our citizens in better touch with their government," said Susan Moran, Cary’s Public Information Officer. More than 4,000 Hispanic and Latino live in Cary, according to the 2000 Census. The largest minority group in Cary is Asian at 8.1 percent. Cary is evaluating which Asian language will be chosen for a third version of the Guide. "One of our communication focuses this year is to expand our Web site by offering multi-language versions of the same information," Moran said. The 50-page Spanish language Guide is a mirror image of its English counterpart, containing an A to Z listing and explanation of services. In February, the Town mailed nearly 33,000 copies of the English version of the Guide to Cary households. It is also on the Web Chefs, Light Your Grills Ingredients for a safe season of cookouts Spring has sprung and back yards throughout Cary fill with the aromas of blooming flowers and burning meat. But before you hoist that Porterhouse onto your gas-fired pride and joy, don’t forget the ingredients for safe grilling. Check grills before the first barbecue, ensuring that hoses and valves don’t have cracks or leaks. Use a thin wire coat hanger to clean a clogged valve. Place grills on level ground at least 10 feet away from the house or any structure. Make sure there aren’t any pine needles, leaves or other things that could catch fire anywhere near the grill. Remember the "out" in cookout. Never grill inside the house or any enclosed structure, including the garage because dangerous carbon monoxide fumes can accumulate to dangerous levels. When lighting a gas grill, remember to always keep the lid open. Call the Cary Fire Department for more tips on a safe season of grilling out.

Outdoor Water Conservation Tip : Don’t water established fescue regularly in summer unless you plan to spend most of your waking hours that way. Many lawns are lost by discontinuing irrigation in mid-summer. You can let fescue lawns snooze in summer by cutting them high, not fertilizing during summertime and watering infrequently.Without rain, water dormant fescue lawns every three weeks during the summer. Don’t let the brown, withered leaves scare you— that’s how dormant fescue is supposed to look. Recycling Tip: Making 1 ton of recycled paper uses about 7,000 less gallons of water than making virgin paper. If you have questions on where to recycle junk mail, white paper, newspaper, or magazines, visit the Town’s Web site at www.townofcary.org under recycling or call 469-4090. Stormwater Tip: If you have a drainage easement on your property, please take responsibility for it. Let the water flow freely. The Town maintains only drainage structures in the road right-of-way.
