Carts Only: Excess Garbage Now Requires Special Collection

The grace period for placing excess bagged trash next to your rollout cart has ended.

Beginning in March, Town garbage truck operators will use an automated arm to dump rollout carts. This means any garbage that doesn’t fit inside your cart will have to be picked up as a special garbage collection.

Each special garbage collection carries a $10 charge.

To avoid paying this fee, you should request a second cart from the Town if your waste does not consistently fit inside the 95-gallon cart you were issued. An additional cart will cost $3.50 per month and will be added to your utility bill.

If you’re not having trouble with excess garbage, the Town can provide a 65-gallon alternative at no charge. But you should make sure your trash will consistently fit inside a smaller cart since additional change outs will cost $10 each.

For more information, call (919) 469-4090 or visit www.townofcary.org.

Art in the Park

It’s time to celebrate the arts in the park!

The 13th annual Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival will take place on Saturday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bond Park.

The festival is free and open to the public.

Come out and enjoy wonderful arts and crafts, entertainment on two stages, your favorite festival food, and much more.

A Children’s Village will keep the youngest members of your family entertained with activities just for them.

We will also celebrate Earth Day at the festival with hands-on activities and information on how to preserve our natural resources.

For more information about Spring Daze or Earth Day, call the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department at (919) 469-4061 or visit www.townofcary.org.

A Difference at the Tap

To comply with state and federal regulations, the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility temporarily stops adding ammonia to its water treatment disinfection process each year during the month of March.

What does this mean for Cary water customers?

You may notice a slight chlorine odor to the water, and in some cases, water may be slightly discolored. These temporary changes are a normal part of the process.

The Town is testing daily to ensure that chlorine levels are safe and will flush the system as needed to maintain water quality.

For more information, call the Public Works and Utilities Department at (919) 469-4090 or visit www.townofcary.org.

Office Closed

Town offices will close on Friday, April 14, 2006 in observance of Good Friday.

Trash collection will change during the week of the holiday.

The Town will collect garbage, recycling and yard waste one day earlier than your regular scheduled collection day.

For more information, call (919) 469-4090.

Stormwater Tip: Review New Maps

New floodplain maps issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Wake County will become effective on May 2, 2006 .

If your property is located in a flood hazard area, your mortgage company may require you to purchase flood insurance. To review the maps, call (919) 469-4030.

Spring checklist: Inspect Irrigation Systems

Spring is just around the corner, the time when many people pull out their housekeeping lists and focus on home repairs.

Don’t forget to take a look outside, too, and add your sprinkler system to your list to be inspected.

Did you know that a broken spray head can waste up to 20 gallons of water each minute? You can prevent your automatic irrigation system from wasting water and your hard-earned money by conducting a “check up” during the month of April:

Turn your system on and inspect all spray heads and valves for leaks.

Repair or replace broken and missing rotor heads, spray heads, “bubblers” and drip emitters.

Replace cracked or broken nozzles. Clean or replace clogged nozzles and the sprinkler’s trash screen if it has one.

Check for proper water pressure. Water will stream out of the sprinkler instead of forming a spray if pressure is too low or mist excessively if it is too high.

Some irrigation systems in the new Southern and Western pressure zones may need to be adjusted to operate effectively. In addition to adjusting or removing the pressure-reducing valve, other options include replacing nozzles with lower gallon per minute models; dividing your lawn into smaller watering zones; or installing a booster pump after the backflow preventor. An irrigation contractor or specialist can provide you with recommendations for your best option.

For more information about automatic irrigation systems, visit www.townofcary.org or call (919) 462-3879.

Plug Into the Facts

Electricity makes life easy: helping us brew our morning coffee, heat our homes, and run our televisions. We use electricity so often that we seldom think about the danger it can cause.

Answer the following questions to see if your use of electrical appliances could be a hazard to your home. Every question you answer with a "no” is an opportunity to make your home a safer place to live.

Are electrical appliances unplugged when you are not using them?

Are electrical cords in good condition, not frayed or cracked?

Are electrical outlets overloaded in your home?

Are electrical cords kept out from beneath furniture and rugs?

Do all outlets and light switches work?

For questions, call the Cary Fire Department at (919) 460-4958.

Support the Torch Run
