Festive Third & Fourth – Celebrating our Nation’s Birthday

You’re invited to a two-day celebration of our nation’s birthday. And it’s all free.

The fun begins Saturday, July 3 with a parent-child fishing tournament at Bond Lake , followed by such competition as donut-eating and watermelon-seed spitting.

Applause! Cary Youth Theatre’s summer touring troupe presents “We the People”, focusing on the words of our country’s forefathers.

The Cary Town Band will present an Independence Eve concert at Sertoma Amphitheatre.

Bring tarps, blankets or chairs to the Amphitheatre at Regency Park on July 4. Gates open at 3 p.m. The Applause troupe and Cary Town Band will perform before the N.C. Symphony takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Fireworks follow.

For more information, see the Headlines box on the home page of townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4061.

Finally, some advice on fireworks.

Common ones include cones, fountains and sparklers. Buy fireworks from reliable sellers. Never give them to young kids.  Don’t point fireworks at anyone or fire from metal or glass containers.

Illegal devices include M80s, M100s and silver salutes because they have dangerous amounts of explosives. Illegal fireworks usually are unlabeled.

For more safety tips, call Cary firefighters at (919) 469-4056.

Hue Cue – What to do near Red and Blue

Watching out for other drivers is challenge enough.

Imagine doing it while answering a call for help or rushing someone to the hospital.

Cary police remind us of the laws to help police, fire and ambulance crews on emergency calls as they pass by and when they’re stopped beside the road.

When They’re Approaching

Pull to the right edge of the road and stop as soon as possible when you hear a siren or see emergency lights. Don’t wait for the police car, fire truck or ambulance to reach you.

Remain stopped until the emergency vehicle passes unless a police or traffic officer signals you to do otherwise.

When They’re Stopped

Be especially careful when driving past an emergency vehicle that is parked near the edge of the road with lights flashing.

Unless directed to do otherwise, pull into the innermost lane. If it’s only a 2-lane street, slow down to pass safely around the patrol car, fire truck or ambulance.

For everyone’s safety, it’s important to know what to do around emergency vehicles.  For more information, call Cary police at (919) 469-4324.

7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Accepted wastes include pesticides, household cleaners, herbicides, poisons, paints, wood preservatives, and used motor oil. For 24 hour information, call (919) 287-8051.

Storm Water Tip: Keep storm drains and streams clear. Report blocked culverts or storm drains within the Town’s road right-of-way by calling (919) 469-4090. For technical assistance, call (919) 469-4076.

Water Conservation Tip: Consider water efficient tools such as drip irrigation systems, Treegator bags and soaker hoses. They get water slowly and directly to the roots of plants. Hose timers allow you to irrigate with minimal disruption to your schedule.  Rain barrels, available at Cary community centers year-round, let you water plants any day of the week. For details, call (919) 469-4090.
