Practice Fire Safety Outdoors
How Safe Are Your Outdoor Areas?

  • Before starting your lawnmower, be sure that it is clear of gasoline fumes.
  • Never use a charcoal grill or hibachi inside the home. They pose an asphyxiation hazard by consuming oxygen and giving off lethal amounts of carbon monoxide.
  • Use only barbecue starter to light a charcoal fire. Never use gasoline to start or rekindle a barbecue fire. Once the fire has started, only use dry kindling to revive it.
  • Set up barbecue grills away from buildings, fences, and combustible items.

For more information contact the Cary Fire Department @ 469-4056.

Conservation Corner

Gardening Tip: Prioritize your outdoor watering needs. Give precedence to newly planted trees, shrubs, and gardens. If your plants do not look wilted or stressed in the hot afternoon, they probably do not require water. Plants that are wilted or stressed early in the morning deserve priority. Fescue grass can survive 3 weeks without water. It will go into dormancy and turn brown, but it is NOT dead. For more details on watering techniques see "Maximizing Landscape Plant Survival" on the Town's website under Water Conservation.

Recycling Tip: Before recycling aluminum foil, pie pans, and trays, be sure all food particles have been removed. Aluminum beverage cans are banned from the landfill and therefore must be recycled. Rinse cans with a small amount of water before placing them in your recycling bin to keep family, friends, and collectors from being stung by a swarm of bees.
