Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 25 for the 31st Annual Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival in downtown Cary! More than 60,000 people are expected at the nationally-recognized festival for some of the Southeast’s best entertainment, art and food.

After the opening ceremonies at 8:45 a.m., live entertainment will be featured on three stages: the Fidelity Stage; Cary Elementary Stage and the Kid’s World Stage at the corner of Park and Academy streets. Also be sure to check out this year’s featured artist, Stanley Fontaine, whose featured work is entitled “Lazy Daze Jazz”.   Free parking will be available at the Cary Town Hall Parking Deck, and at the Cary Towne Center Mall. Free shuttles will be provided to and from the mall. For more, call (919) 469-4061.

Cary scores homerun with new baseball complex

On Tuesday, June 19, Town of Cary elected officials and staff joined with USA Baseball representatives to open the world-class, $11 million USA Baseball National Training Complex in western Cary. Located within Thomas Brooks Park, the facility will be used to train and support some of the nation’s top baseball players, including the Olympic Baseball Team, and the USAB Junior and Youth National Teams.

The Complex features four baseball fields that will be available to the public, including a stadium field that seats more than 2,000 and three training fields that accommodate 120 people each. Cary was selected to be the new home of USA Baseball in 2002. Way to go, Cary and USA Baseball!

Downtown is one click away

Something new is linked to the Town of Cary’s Web site. Cary just launched the Downtown Streetscape section of its Web site at www.carystreetscape.org. The Web site provides updated information about the Downtown Streetscape improvements, including project details, progress and meetings.

Click on the Streetcape icon on the Town’s main page at www.townofcary.org for quick access to the site.

A Link to Save Lives

Don’t let a disaster catch you unprepared.  Visit www.readywake.com for information on how to prepare for disasters before they strike. The Web site offers planning tips on topics such as emergency kits, emergency contact numbers and plans for reuniting with family.

Ready Wake brochures are also available at Cary community centers, all Parks, Recreations and Cultural Resources facilities, in fire stations and fire vehicles, and at the two public libraries in Cary.

Bud Bits

The Town has purchased more than 45 acres of what was known as the A.M. Howard Farm in western Cary.

The purchase will ensure that the property, built in the early 1900s, is not demolished or used for commercial development.

——————

The Town has closed on a $35.7 million bond sale with an average interest rate of 4.4% on 25 year bonds. The sale included a $13 million refunding that will save the Town $836,000 in budgeted debt service over the remaining 20 year life of the refinanced bonds. These lower interest rates will help minimize the impact of debt service on utility rates for 25 years.

Welcome to new forum manager

The N.C. Center for Voter Education (NCCVE) has been selected to manage the 2007 Candidate Forum that will be held on Sept. 12 at the Town Hall Council Chambers, 316 North Academy St. This year’s forum will feature candidates running for Council seats in districts B, D and one of two At-Large seats as well as School Board seats.

As in the 2003 and 2005 forums, questions can be submitted to the forum manager via mail or e-mail July 25-August 31. New this year, citizens can submit more than one question. The NCCVE will select questions to be read at the forum, which will be pre-recorded and broadcast on Cary TV 11. For more, call (919) 839-1200.

Keep Mosquitoes Away

Stop these uninvited guests from ruining your outdoor, summer fun. Standing water is the most common breeding ground for mosquitoes so remember to empty or frequently change water in the following containers:

  • Pet dishes

  • Clogged rain gutters

  • Wading pools

  • Dishes beneath flower pots

  • Birdbaths

  • Rain barrels

  • Toys that hold water

Cary does it again

The Town of Cary has achieved yet another milestone, being designated as one of North Carolina’s fit communities. Cary was one of nine communities to receive the designation during a ceremony in June from the Fit Together partnership. The designation is a public acknowledgement of a town or county's livability and commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents. Congrats!

Recycling made easy

Recycle your unwaxed corrugated cardboard, such as moving boxes and shipping boxes, in your curbside recycling bin. Corrugated cardboard can be identified by its three layers (two flat layers surrounding a wavy layer inside). Before placing it in or under your bin, please remember to:

  • Flatten and cut (do not fold) into pieces that are no bigger than 2’ x 3’

  • Remove all packing material and excess tape

Do not include pizza boxes or chipboard such as cereal or shoe boxes. Corrugated cardboard won’t fit in your bin? Call the department of Public Works and Utilities at (919) 469-4090 to schedule a free pickup. You can also take corrugated cardboard to the Citizen’s Convenience Center lat 313 N. Dixon Ave.

Spend the Night with Cary PD

Cary’s Police Department is coming out into the community as part of their 24th annual National Night Out (NNO) celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Representatives from the Cary Police and Fire departments along with a host of other law enforcement agencies come to your neighborhood upon request to promote safety and crime prevention.

This year, Carolina Air Care’s Tarheel One medical helicopter will also make an appearance.

NNO highlights the partnership between the Town and other agencies. If your neighborhood is planning an event and would like a visit from the Police Department, call Officer Michael Sakata at (919) 469-4324 or e-mail him at Michael.sakata@townofcary.org.

Do your part

The Town routinely clears utility easements to prevent tree root penetration into sewer lines, which causes blockages and overflows. While we notify property owners in advance, we ask that you keep easements clear all the time.
