Rolling Toward Rollout

We’ve begun planning for the transition from backyard garbage pickup to curbside collection this fall. Carts will be distributed over eight weeks beginning in late September or early October.

Your collection day for solid waste and recycling will stay the same.  We’ll take your yard waste that day, too, instead of gathering it throughout town on Mondays. Existing town home and condominium customers with three or more units to the building will still receive backyard collection. Yard waste will be added to your current collection day.

Cary and Winston-Salem are the only large communities in N.C. with backyard pickup. Raleigh converted to curbside last year.

A 2004 survey showed most of you support curbside collection. It’s the safest, most efficient, equitable, and economical method.

Consider keeping your old garbage can for yard waste. If you want, you can leave the can at the curb on your collection day and we’ll take it away for you.

If your physician feels that you are physically unable to bring the new solid waste cart to the curb, you may submit a special service exemption form requesting that we continue backyard collection.

For more information, call (919) 469-4090 or see Solid Waste at www.townofcary.org.

Get more details in each upcoming Bud through April 2006.

Reaching Out to Candidates, Voters

An Invitation to Candidates: The Sept. 14 forum will be for Town Council districts A and C and for one of the At-Large seats as well as School Board districts 2, 7 and 9. Town Council and School Board candidates participating in the Cary Community Candidate Forum should RSVP to the League of Women Voters. Contact the League by Aug. 29 by calling or faxing (919) 856-1983 or e-mailing lwvwake@aol.com. Segments will be recorded live to tape and cablecast regularly on Cary TV 11.

Seeking Questions from Cary Citizens: The LWV needs unique, relevant and appropriate questions for Council and School Board candidates at the forum. The goal is to be positive, efficient and equitable. Send questions July 1 - Aug. 31 to ATTN: League of Women Voters Candidate Forum at P.O. Box 10345, Raleigh, NC 27605. You can also call (919) 856-1983 or send an e-mail to lwvwake@aol.com. Give your name and address. Anonymous questions will not be used.

Look under Site Index on our Web to learn more.

Giving a Little Greenery

Our Oasis program helps those going through financial hardship with their Town of Cary utility bill through donations from other utility customers. The program is administered through a partnership between the Town and Christian Community in Action, a local non-profit organization. Donations are quick, easy and tax-deductible.

CCA assists about four families per month through Oasis. A recent example was a family of four that needed help with bills after the father lost his job. By using Oasis donations for the family’s water bill, CCA could provide extra help on the rent.

For more information, call us at (919) 469-4050 or see Oasis under Site Index on our Web site.

Closing a Thief’s Window of Opportunity

It’s that time of year when many of us leave our windows open at home and the car windows rolled down. We may also leave the garage door open when working outdoors. Our police officers remind you that these things provide opportunities for criminals.

Also, it’s a bad idea to leave the car running while you run into the store, even if you’re away only briefly. The same goes for leaving the keys in the car with the engine off.

Please do not leave children or animals in the car unattended for any amount of time.

To learn more, call our police Community Services coordinator at (919) 469-4324.

Lazy Daze

The Lazy Daze festival is Saturday, Aug. 27 in downtown Cary.

Grill Chill – A No Play Zone

  •  When you’re grilling out, designate a “No Play Zone” keeping kids and pets well away until grill equipment is completely cool.

  •  Before using, position your grill at least 3 feet away from other objects, including the house and any shrubs or bushes.

  •  Only use starter fluid made for barbecue grills when starting a fire in a charcoal grill.

  •  Before using a gas grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line to be sure it is not leaking.

  •  Never use a match to check for leaks. If you detect a leak, immediately turn off the gas and don’t attempt to light the grill again until the leak is fixed.

  •  Never bring a barbecue grill indoors, or into any unventilated space. This is both a fire and carbon monoxide poisoning hazard.

For more safety tips, call Cary firefighters at (919) 469-4056.

Dynamic Duo on Duty

Our Police Department’s first K9 team has completed its training and is beginning duty. Officer Jeremy Burgin and a German Shepard named Max are a team in every sense. Max lives with Jeremy. To Max, Jeremy is Dad. Max enjoys being groomed and likes to chase the splashes when Jeremy is giving him a bath.

Having a K9 team will help our police officers track lost persons or fleeing suspects, search for discarded or hidden evidence or contraband. It will also help them find illegal drugs, search buildings and help protect officers.

Help Max be productive by not approaching him or trying to pet him while he’s working.

Many people have expressed an interest in assisting the program with donations.

To learn more, check under Site Index at www.townofcary.org.

Water Wisdom

Demand for water in summertime can double that of winter so please help us conserve this precious resource. We ask that you water your lawn no more than 1 inch per week, minus rainfall. Click the H20 icon on the home page of our Web site. See the Water Waste Ordinance and Alternate Day rule. You’ll also find many tips on conserving indoors and outdoors.

Protecting Our Protectors

The purpose of the state’s move-over law is to protect police, fire and ambulance crews who are stopped by the road. Drivers should move over to the next lane if possible or reduce speed for stopped emergency vehicles. Watch for police officers getting out of their cars. Please help police, firefighters and ambulance crews do their jobs safely and quickly.

Roll Reversal – Recycling Addition

You may now recycle chipboard such as cereal and shoe boxes and paper towel, toilet paper and wrapping paper rolls. Recycling these items can save significant landfill space.

Put chipboard in corrugated cardboard containers at the Citizens Convenience Center at 313 N. Dixon Ave.  It is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Our recycling trucks cannot handle the increased load. So please do not include chipboard in your curbside bins.

Project ASSIST

We’re participating in a voluntary program called Project ASSIST to protect health by reducing exposure to second-hand smoke.

For details and a list of participating restaurants, click the no-smoking icon on the home page of www.townofcary.org.
