State of the Town

Mayor Harold Weinbrecht speaks to Cary citizens about the issues, trends and initiatives that interest you the most in his first State of the Town address, continuing the tradition started in 2006. He shares his vision for maintaining Cary’s high quality of life through infrastructure improvements, economic development, transportation projects, environmental protection, fiscal responsibility and community involvement.

“Cary begins 2008 by continuing to be one of the most desirable places to live, with tree lined streets, well planned subdivisions, beautiful office parks, world class recreation amenities and a prosperous, diverse citizenry. Cary continues to be one of the top 20 safest places to live in the country, and your Town government is efficient, effective, and fiscally sound. The potential for Cary’s accomplishments are unlimited … I truly believe that we all want the same thing – to keep Cary great – and working together, we will succeed.”

Tuning in to what matters in Cary

We know that some citizens feel like they are not as informed as they would like to be about what’s going on in Cary. Do you have questions about Town services or initiatives? Want to hear directly from your elected officials?

Cary Matters is a new monthly program on Cary TV 11 that features one or two Town Council members discussing current and emerging issues. They will also answer questions submitted by Cary citizens. Send your questions to carymatters@townofcary.org

Watch the premiere edition of Cary Matters on Cary TV 11 or the Town’s Web site beginning Feb. 1.

Meet the chief

Cary’s new police chief has a familiar face.

Patricia Holland Bazemore was named as the Town’s 18th Police Chief on Jan. 11.

Bazemore began working for the Cary Police Department in 1986 as a patrol officer. She was the department’s first female sergeant, first female lieutenant, first female captain, and first female major.  She was also Cary’s first Deputy Chief and has twice served as the Town’s Interim Police Chief.

Share your budget priorities

In February, we’re inviting you to weigh in on the priorities you feel should be included in the Town’s Fiscal Year 2009 budget, which will identify services and projects to be undertaken by the Town from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009.

Send us your ideas via e-mail at budgetinput@townofcary.org or leave a voicemail at 462-3858.

All comments must be submitted by Feb. 29. To learn more or to view the current budget, visit Budget Development at www.townofcary.org.

Bud Bits

  • Recycle unwanted telephone books Feb. 4, 2008 until May 9, 2008 during Wake County's Annual Telephone Book Recycling Program. In Cary, take phone books to Cary Elementary School, White Oak Park and Ritter Park. For more, visit www.wakegov.com.

  • We routinely clear utility easements of trees and regrowth to prevent tree root penetration into sewer lines, which causes blockages and overflows. Help us do our work by keeping easements clear all the time. For more details, call 469-4090.

Cary becomes WaterSense partner

We’re proud to announce that we are one of the first municipalities in North Carolina to become a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency WaterSense partner.

As a WaterSense partner, we’ll be helping our customers learn about and identify water-efficient products in the marketplace that have been independently certified for efficiency and performance. Look for the WaterSense label on appliances and fixtures in stores, and in selecting water-related services such as irrigation specialists.

As the drought of 2007 continues into 2008, our partnership with the EPA further enhances our water conservation educational efforts. We encourage you to use water wisely and replace inefficient fixtures in order to conserve water.

Ready to start conserving more? Call the Public Works and Utilities Department at 469-4090 to request a water flow bag to test the efficiency of your showerheads and faucets or a Toilet Training Tutorial to help you detect and repair leaks. If you need an efficient showerhead or faucet aerator (bathroom or kitchen), you can pick one up free of charge from our Operations Center at 400 James Jackson Ave.

To learn more about the WaterSense program, visit www.epa.gov/watersense or check out the Water Conservation section of our Web site at www.townofcary.org.

No switch required

Each year in March, we typically switch the disinfectant used in our water treatment process to perform a state-mandated cleansing of the system.

Due to the drought and the exceptional health and safety of our system, the state is allowing Cary, as well as other towns and cities, to forgo the process that calls for us to use chlorine instead of ammonia for one month. This annual disinfection process uses a lot of water to flush the system.

Be assured that we continually monitor our system to maintain the highest quality of water. For more information on Cary’s water treatment process, visit www.townofcary.org.
