Avoiding Run-ins with the Law

We’re promoting awareness of two state laws to move traffic safely around police traffic stops and minor accidents.

The 3-year-old “Move Over” law covers emergency vehicles on the shoulder of the road.

Drivers should move over to the next lane if possible or reduce speed for stopped emergency vehicles. Watch for police officers getting in or out of their cars. And help firefighters and ambulance crews do their jobs safely and quickly.

Thirty percent of crashes occur as a result of another crash. The “Fender Bender” law was enacted in 2003 as a result.

Move your car to the shoulder of the road in such accidents if both cars can be driven and no one is hurt. Your insurance company won’t penalize you.

“Move Over” and “Fender Bender” violations result in fines plus court costs. For more information, call Cary police at (919) 469-4338 or visit www.ncsmartlink.org.

Gold Star for HR

Our Human Resources program has been judged tops in the nation by the International Personnel Management Association.

Our staff became only the second one in the state to earn the National Agency Award for Excellence.

Pointing the Way – A New Approach to Open House Signs

To help home sellers and buyers, we’re allowing signs limited use of signs directing people to open houses in 2005.

This one-year trial covers where and when open house signs are allowed and what they look like Jan. 1, 2005 - Dec. 31, 2005 .

“Off premises” open house signs will be OK on weekends on private property in residential areas, but not in street rights-of-way.  The limit for a particular home is two signs per open house, two weekends per year.

Before placing your off-premises open house sign next year, learn the rules by checking the Open House Signs section under Site Index at www.townofcary.org.

Needle Points – Christmas Trees Inside & Out During the Holidays

If your home has a Christmas tree, please take a few precautions to keep your family safe.

Always unplug lights before leaving home or going to bed. Don’t use light strands with frayed cords or loose bulb connections. Never use electric lights on a metal tree. Ensure larger tree lights have reflectors, not bare bulbs. Never use lit candles on or near a Christmas tree.

Buy artificial trees that are labeled fire retardant.

For more advice, call Cary firefighters at (919) 469-4056.

After the Holidays

We begin a town-wide sweep for Christmas trees Jan. 12. Have your tree at the curb by 7 a.m. that day. Please don’t cover hydrants or water meters.

Remove all decorations from the tree - lights, tinsel, stands, etc. That’s important because we run trees through a chipper.

Trees not taken during the first sweep will be accepted as Monday yard waste starting Jan. 26.   Please don’t dump trees in streams.  It can cause flooding.

For when and where to drop off a tree, see Christmas Tree Collection under Site Index at www.townofcary.org.

Curb Appeal – The Price of Ice

We have to suspend back yard garbage collection after snow and ice storms.

Traipsing through ice covered yards is unsafe for our crews.  Plus,  we don’t want to damage yards softened by melting ice.

Please bring garbage cans to the curb at these times. If you’re physically unable to do so, call (919) 469-4090 ahead of time.

For the latest on street clearing, closings and other storm news, check the Severe Weather page. Find it under Site Index on our

Closed Door Policy – Keeping Thieves at Bay by Securing Garages

Several of your neighbors have had golf clubs, beverages, and other items taken from their garages after leaving garages unattended with the door open.

Some unlocked vehicles parked in open garages have been broken into as well.  Many of the thefts occurred while the residents were at home.

Secure your garage door when that area of your home is not being used, whether you are in the house or not. Don’t make it easy for thieves.

Help us spread the word by telling your neighbors to keep their garage doors closed, too.   Always report any suspicious activity to police.

For more crime prevention advice, contact Community Services in the Police Department at (919) 469-4324.

Drawing Water

Check out the new graphs on your monthly utility bills charting water usage over 13 months.

They help illustrate seasonal changes in usage and help pinpoint unexpected increases.

This can alert you to such problems as toilet leaks, which can run your bill sky high before you notice a problem.

Call (919) 469-4050 for more on the graphs. For water conservation tips, call (919) 469-4090.
