Alternate Day Watering

When do you water your lawn?

Early morning is the best time to irrigate because it can help minimize water lost to evaporation.

No matter what time of day you choose, we’re reminding our water customers to follow the Town’s alternate day watering schedule for automated irrigation:

     • Odd-street addresses: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday

     • Even-street addresses: Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday

     • Automated irrigation is not permitted on Mondays. Handwatering is allowed any day of the week.

It may not be necessary to water on each of your designated days. Well established turf can survive up to three weeks without water.

For more on alternate day watering, visit the Town’s Web site at www.townofcary.org.

Fireworks and Festival Fun

We’re gearing up for our annual Independence Day celebration by planning two days of free events we know your whole family will love.

Our Independence Eve Celebration kicks off at 6:15 p.m. on July 3 at the Sertoma Amphitheatre in Bond Park and features  performances by Applause! Cary Youth Theatre and the Cary Town Band.

On July 4, join us for our Independence Day Olde Time Celebration. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. , we’re serving up a fun-filled day of games and competitions at Bond Park.

We’ll end the day at Koka Booth Amphitheatre with fireworks and the sounds of the North Carolina Symphony.

For more, call 469-4061 or visit Independence Day Events at www.townofcary.org.

Make Room for New Carts at the Curb

Now that our recycling cart distribution is in full swing, and some have already begun rolling their recycling materials to the curb, please be mindful of how you place your new cart at the curb.

By 7 a.m. on your collection day, place your cart at the curb - not in the street or on the sidewalk or on top of your meter box. Set the cart facing out with the arrows on the lid pointing toward the street.

Be sure your cart is placed a good distance away from light poles, fire hydrants, and mailboxes so that they can be accessed easily as needed.

Also, be sure to leave ample room between your recycling cart, your garbage cart and yard waste – at least two feet. This space ensures that drivers of our automated trucks can efficiently collect your items.

Finally, please don’t put anything other than materials approved for recycling in your recycling cart. Yard waste and plastic grocery bags should not be put in recycling carts.

For a list of approved items, visit Curbside Recycling at www.townofcary.org.

High Rankings in Tough Times

For the third time in nine years, all three major national bond rating agencies (Fitch, Standard & Poor’s, and Moody’s)  have given Cary their highest possible rankings on our general obligation bonds – Triple A (AAA).

We are one of only seven cities in North Carolina with consistent AAA ratings.

Our conservative approach to spending and good financial management earned high marks. Cary ’s AAA ratings will help us save hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest over the years.

Bud Bits

  • Town offices will be closed on Friday, July 3 for Independence Day. Solid waste, yard waste and recycling materials will be picked up on your regular collection day.

  • Don’t forget to apply to fill one of the 41 upcoming vacancies on the Town’s volunteer boards and commissions. Board terms will begin Oct. 1. Applications will be accepted until June 30. For questions, contact Karen Gray at 319-4508 or karen.gray@townofcary.org. For information or an application, visit www.townofcary.org.

Prepare for Bad Weather

June 1 marks the start of hurricane season. Are you ready?

Hurricanes can cause power outages, flooding and more. You may even have to evacuate from your home temporarily.

Get ready by getting informed. For information and tips, including how to prepare a three-day emergency kit, visit www.townofcary.org.

Call Before You Dig

Digging in the dirt is a pleasure for some and work for others. But did you know that North Carolina law requires you to notify your area utilities at least 48 hours (two working days) in advance of an excavation project?

Before you (or your contractor) start installing the new swimming pool, sprinkler system, or even trees and shrubs, dial 811 and talk toll-free to the North Carolina One Call Center who will handle everything for you – except the digging!

North Carolina One Call will notify all your local utilities, including PSNC Energy. PSNC Energy will then locate and mark its underground facilities in the area where you plan to dig.

Remember calling before you dig doesn’t cost a thing, but not calling could result in property damage or serious injury. For more, visit www.ncocc.org.

Fee Change for Pet Tags

Effective July 1, the fee to license your cats and dogs will change. Cary ’s Council adopted the new fees to encourage responsible pet ownership:

     Non-spayed/Non-neutered animals: $50;

     • Spayed or neutered animals: $10;

     • Spayed or neutered animals with a microchip: $5.

Cary Receives National Award for Safe Water

Our Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility has been recognized as a Five Years Directors Award recipient by the Partnership for Safe Water, a national voluntary initiative developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and other water organizations striving to provide communities with drinking water quality that surpasses the required federal standards.

We were first honored with the Directors Award in 2003 and have been re-certified at this level each year thereafter. Since the Five Year Award was implemented several years ago, only 148 plants nationwide have received this award.

The Directors Award is presented to water systems who conduct a self-examination of their treatment plant operation and administration and then create a plan for implementing improvements.

Report Blocked Storm Drains

Storm drains in Cary are designed to handle drainage from a 10-year storm (2.4 inches of rain within an hour). Culverts that carry streams under streets are designed for a 25-year storm (2.8 inches of rain within an hour).

Intense localized thunderstorms can exceed these rainfall amounts and overwhelm our drainage systems. Rain can back up into the street or overflow streambanks.

If you see flooding due to a blocked culvert or storm drain, please report it immediately by calling us at 469-4090.
