Helping Out With Rollout - Collection Assistance for Medical Reasons

A 2004 survey showed that most of you support curbside collection. It's the safest, most efficient, equitable and economical method. But we realize some of you may be physically unable to use the new solid waste carts that will begin arriving in early fall.

If your physician feels that you cannot roll the cart to the curb, you may make a curbside assistance request asking that we help with rolling your cart. Contact us right away if you think you may be eligible for collection assistance.

For more details on seeking a medical exemption, call (919) 469-4090, or see Curbside Solid Waste under Site Index at www.townofcary.org.

Everyone's collect day for solid waste and recycling will stay the same with curbside collection. We'll take your yard waste that day, too, instead of gathering it throughout town on Mondays. Existing town home and condominium customers with three or more units will continue to receive backyard solid waste collection. Yard waste will move to the current collection day.

Get more details on the switch to rollout carts in each upcoming Bud through April 2006.

Lazy Daze - Cure for Summer Malaise

Lazy Daze Festival  -  Saturday, August 27  -  9 a.m. - 5 p.m.  -  Downtown Cary

Last year's Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival was named Regional Event of the Year by the N.C. Association of Festivals and Events and the S.C. Festivals and Events Association. The tradition continues as one of the South's premier festivals marks its 29th year on August 27. The juried show brings 50,000 people downtown to see the handiwork of more than 400 artisans. This year's group hails from 19 states.

Lazy Daze is fun for the entire family with arts and crafts, food, Kid's World, and two stages with entertainment all day. Entertainers will include Bill Leslie and Lorica, Johnny Dollar, Hemlock Bluffs Cloggers, Vaughn Penn, Cary Town Band, Edsel 500, Bill Phillips, and Carolina Gator Gumbo.

Festival admission is free. For more information, call (919) 469-4061 or see the Recreation & Entertainment section of www.townofcary.org.

Quizzing the Candidates

Time is running short for submitting your question for the Cary Community Candidate Forum on September 14.

Send in your question before the end of August to the attention of Cary Community Candidate Forum at P. O. Box 10345, Raleigh, NC 27605. You can also fax questions to (919) 856-1983 or e-mail questions to lwvwake@aol.com.

The forum is for Town Council and School Board candidates representing Cary. It will air numerous times on Cary TV. We want the forum to be fair to all, dignified and professional. No anonymous questions will be accepted.

To learn more, look under Site Index on our Web site.

Bud Bits

Mark your calendars for N.C. Big Sweep on October 1 at 9 a.m. Call Betsy Pearce at (919) 469-4038 for more information or to register your group.

Please rinse soda cans and bottles so recycling collectors have less chance of being stung by bees. Also, to maximize space on the trucks, please crush all plastic bottles.

Rain barrels are available at Cary community centers. These 65-gallon barrels are made from recycled plastic. They cost $65 each and can be purchased with cash, check or credit card.

The FY 2006 budget keeps the property tax rate at 42 cents per $100 valuation. It includes cuts in jobs and expenses as well as increases in a number of user fees and charges. For more details, go to www.townofcary.org.

Cary Town offices will be closed Monday, Sep 5, for Labor Day. Yard waste will not be picked up that week. Collection of household garbage, recyclables and curbside trash will be on the usual schedule. Call (919) 469-4090 if you have questions.

Refuse Reuse Reasons

Recycling is a very important component of our environmental program and the services we provide. We operate a very professional and effective program. We have organized and we manage the program so that no recycled material goes to a landfill.

Between July 2004 and June 2005, our Public Works & Utilities Department collected 7,600 tons of recyclable materials. By keeping these materials out of the landfill, we saved money that would have been paid in tipping fees for disposal. The Town receives money by selling the recyclable materials. The amount in 2004-2005 was $588,000.

The list of recyclable materials continues to grow. For more information on our program, see Recycling in Site Index at www.townofcary.org.

Safe Passage for Kids

Cary police have suggestions for keeping kids safe.

  • List phone numbers of family, friends and neighbors that your child can call in an emergency.

  • Make sure your child knows how and when to dial 911.

  • Supervise children's use of the Internet.

  • Make sure your child knows to never give out personal information online.

  • Know the route your child will take to and from places. Remind him or her never to deviate from the agreed-upon route.

  • Require your child to check in before leaving the house and when returning home.

  • Teach that it is best to be with a group of friends when going places without an adult.

  • Provide a bike helmet and require your child to wear brightly colored or reflective clothing.

For more tips, call Community Services at (919) 469-4324.

Cary by the Numbers

Cary's population July 1, 2005 was 111,039. That's 2.67 percent more than in July 2004.

Giving Water by Getting Wet

Our July 4 celebration at Booth Amphitheatre had time set aside for some good causes. A dunking booth raised $314 for the Oasis program, which helps individuals needing assistance with their Town of Cary utility bills.

Also folks sent 344 postcards with messages of support and thanks to our service men and women overeas.

Sewer Leak Smoke-out

To help protect the environment, we test for leaks in the sewer system by forcing non-toxic smoke into the lines. This year's testing will begin August 23, weather permitting. The area is between Davis Drive and High House, Old Apex and Maynard roads.

Testing in a neighborhood may take only a few minutes. Notices will be distributed 24 hours in advance.

Call (919) 469-4090 or visit our Web site for more details.
