Lazy Daze – Remedy for Summer Malaise

One of the state’s premier arts and crafts festivals marks its 28th year in downtown Cary .

The Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival is free and open to everyone.

The juried show brings more than 50,000 people downtown on the fourth Saturday of each August to see more than 400 artisans.

In addition to arts and crafts, there is food, a “Kid’s World” and two stages with entertainment all day.

New this year is the Town Crier from Cary ’s economic development and cultural exchange partner, Markham in Ontario , Canada .

For the first time during Lazy Daze, the Page-Walker Arts & History Center will be open until 5 p.m. See “Images from Markham , Canada ”. It’s hosted by Cary ’s Sister Cities Commission.

For more festival details, see the Recreation section of our Web site, www.townofcary.org, or call (919) 469-4061.

Bad Lighting – Helping Kids See the Danger of Playing with Fire

Matches and lighters are among the leading causes of fire-related deaths for children under age 5.

Children have a natural curiosity about fire. Don’t underestimate their ability to strike matches or start a lighter.

Store matches and lighters out of children's reach and sight, preferably in a locked cabinet. Even child-resistant lighters are not childproof.

Teach toddlers to tell you when they find a match or a lighter.

If a child is curious about fire or has been playing with fire, calmly but firmly explain that matches and lighters are for adults to use carefully.

Never use matches or lighters as amusement. Children may imitate you when you’re not around.

Prevent fires by practicing and teaching safe behaviors in your home. For more safety advice, call the Cary Fire Department at (919) 469-4056.

Safety in Numbers

Please help us reach you quickly in an emergency.

In addition to the mailbox, the address should be on the streets side of the building. Numbers should be at least 6 inches tall on commercial buildings and at least 3 inches tall on residential ones. Colors should contrast with the background.

Smoke Jumpers – Getting the Drop on Sewer Leaks

Each year our Utilities crews test for sewer system leaks using a special non-toxic smoke.

The purposes are to see where water is leaking into the system and to reveal sources of odor.

This year’s testing will be in several areas on the north side of town starting in late August.

Most will never see or smell the smoke. But we want to fully explain what we’re doing. For details, see Smoke Testing under Site Index on our Web site.

If you detect smoke in your home, call us at (919) 469-4090 and also call your plumber. The smoke won’t harm you or your pets or leave stains in your home.

Trail Guide – Charting Course on Bond Park Trails

You’re invited to a meeting Sept. 14 to review and comment on draft alternatives for updating trails within Bond Park.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in Cary Senior Center , which is in Bond Park off High House Road .

We envision Bond Park as the hub of a regional greenway system.  We’re developing a master plan to ensure connectivity and continuity of trails. We want people of different abilities and interests to use them.

The plan also focuses on trail renovation and maintenance, preserving natural resources, and on reducing conflicts with people who live near the trails.

After reviewing comments, we’ll present the final plan Sept. 28 at the senior center. We want a plan that balances community needs.

For more information, see Bond Park Trails Master Plan in the Recreation section of our Web.

Sertoma Sundays

Enjoy the Fall Sertoma Concert Series in Bond Park’s Sertoma Amphitheatre. Shows are rain or shine. For more on this season’s lineup, call (919) 469-4061 or see Events & Concerts in the

Recreation section of our Web site, www.townofcary.org.

Shows are free and open to the public.

Quick Change Artists

It is now easier for you to make small changes to an approved site plan.

Our Planning staff offers a weekly minor alteration review.  Minor alterations include changing landscaping, adding awnings, switching exterior paint colors, making small changes to building façades, etc.

We want to streamline things to get small projects reviewed more quickly.

Simply fill out an application, turn in two 11x17 inch plan sets and pay a $50 application fee by Monday at noon . We’ll have a decision for you by the close of business that Friday.

If you have questions about whether minor alteration review fits your project, please give our Planning Department a call at (919) 469-4082.

Conservation Corner

Storm Water Tip: We’ve recently received new floodplain maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the portion of Cary in the Neuse River basin . Please review them if your property is currently in a floodplain or near a flood-prone stream. Map changes may determine whether you must have flood insurance.  Appeals to proposed flood elevations can be submitted until about Oct. 15. To review the maps, call Terry Warren, floodplain manager, at (919) 462-3932. He will have a staff member meet with you to help locate your property and explain insurance implications.

Water Conservation Tip: Stop by the water conservation booth during the Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival and pick up free water conservation information and devices. These include rain gauges, efficient showerheads, shower timers, faucet aerators, toilet flapper coupons, and toilet dye tablets.
