Free Towing: Cary Helps Residents Get Rid of Junk Cars

  Do you have an old car that is no longer running and is taking up space in your backyard or garage?

  You can get rid of it for free just by calling the Town of Cary .

  To help residents keep Cary beautiful, the Town has developed a procedure that enables junk vehicles to be removed at no cost.

  In Cary , a junk vehicle is one that doesn’t have a current license plate and at least one of the following is true:

  It is partially dismantled or wrecked;

  It doesn’t run or move in the manner intended;

  It’s over 5 years old and looks to be worth less than $100.

  If you know of a property that has a possible junk vehicle, you can call the Town and information will be sent to the property owner about free removal. A vehicle that is used on a regular basis for work or personal use is not considered a junk car, regardless of its appearance.

  For more information, call (919) 462-3885 or visit www.townofcary.org.

Curbside Line-up: Carts, Bins and Cans

   Cary citizens are doing a great job of rolling their garbage to the curb by 7 a.m. on their collection day. Here are some tips to help you place your cart properly at the curb.

   First, make sure your cart is not in the street, on the sidewalk or on the meter box. Place it away from light poles, mailboxes and fire hydrants.

   Next, locate the arrows on the lid of your rollout cart. Set the cart at the curb so that the arrows are pointing to the street.

   Finally, place your recycling bin and yard waste next to – and not on top of – your rollout cart. Be sure to leave a few feet of space on each side of the cart to ensure it is collected by the automated arm of our trucks.

   Remove your emptied cart from the curb by 6 a.m. the following day.

   Everyone who receives a rollout cart should place all of their garbage inside for collection. If you have excess garbage that will not fit inside your cart, you can drop it off at the Citizen Convenience Center at 313 N. Dixon Ave. at no charge. You can also request a special garbage collection. Each special collection is subject to a $10 fee.

   For more information, contact the Public Works Department at (919) 469-4090.

Selected for Good Service

   The Town of Cary has been selected by the Town of Morrisville to provide water and sewer service to its utility customers.

   Morrisville’s utility service merger with Cary will ensure its ability to provide high quality, reliable, safe and sanitary water and sewer service to current and future customers.

   Cary utility customers will be unaffected by the merger. There will be no changes to Cary service or rates as a result of this partnership.

   We are proud to offer our services to Morrisville customers. The utility merger demonstrates our commitment to being a good neighbor and is an example of regional cooperation.

Yard Sale Signs

  Spring is a good time to review yard sale sign rules that help keep our neighborhoods neat.

  Remember, there is a limit on the number and size of the signs you can use, as well as the time they can be posted:

  Only one sign is allowed on the lot where the sale is located and one on different private property with the owner’s permission. Don’t put signs on utility poles, in medians or on road sides (public rights of way).

  Size limit is 4 square feet and 42 inches high;

  Signs can be posted on weekends only: from 5 p.m. on Friday to 8 a.m. on Monday.

Move Right for Sirens and Lights

   When the police or fire department is called to an emergency, it is important that they respond quickly and safely.

   If you are driving down the road and see the lights of an emergency vehicle in your rearview mirror, move to the right and stop to allow the vehicle to move easily down the road. Once emergency vehicles have passed, merge back into traffic when it is safe to do so.

   Do your part as a driver to help police officers and fire fighters get their job done quickly and safely. And remember: It’s the law.
