Traffic Safety

Traffic Safety unit members investigate traffic complaints and major crashes. They also are responsible for traffic enforcement, safety programs and training. Four patrol officers and four motorcycle officers are assigned these responsibilities. Traffic Safety members assist the Field Services Division by identifying hazardous locations and reducing violations that cause crashes.

Traffic officers are responsible for detection of Driving While Impaired, speeding, improper child safety restraint and other violations. A mobile traffic radar trailer is used to increase motorist awareness of speeding. Traffic officers also conduct checkpoints for DWI and for seatbelt & child safety violations. Each traffic unit vehicle has a radar unit, Vascar, MDC, and a portable breath tester.

Other responsibilities include investigation of violations reported by school bus drivers, school speed zone enforcement, traffic direction, and control at special events. Traffic Safety Officers make presentations and prepare traffic safety displays for groups of all ages.
