Traffic Safety Traffic Safety unit members investigate traffic complaints and major crashes. They also are responsible for traffic enforcement, safety programs and training. Four patrol officers and four
motorcycle officers are assigned these responsibilities. Traffic Safety members assist the Field Services
Division by identifying hazardous locations and reducing violations that
cause crashes.
Traffic officers are responsible for detection of Driving While Impaired,
speeding, improper child safety restraint and other violations. A mobile traffic radar trailer
is used to
increase motorist awareness of speeding. Traffic officers also conduct checkpoints for DWI and for seatbelt & child safety
violations. Each traffic unit
vehicle has a radar unit, Vascar, MDC, and a
portable breath tester.
Other
responsibilities include
investigation of violations reported by school bus
drivers, school speed zone enforcement, traffic direction,
and control at special events. Traffic Safety Officers make presentations and
prepare traffic safety displays for groups of all ages.
