Branches of Government
Cary, N.C. is consistently recognized for its quality of life. Careful planning, recreational opportunities, and access to the cultural diversity, educational opportunities, and medical facilities of the Triangle contribute to Cary's livability. The citizens of Cary expect quality recreational programs, safe streets, attractive neighborhoods, clean water, regular trash pick up, and prompt emergency services. They participate on Town boards and commissions that help shape the direction of Town government
The Cary Town Council consists of a Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem and five other Council members and serves as the legislative branch for the Town of Cary. The Council is responsible for adopting a budget and establishing policies and ordinances. Council meetings are open to the public.
The citizens of Cary elect the Mayor. The Council names one of its members as Mayor Pro Tem to preside over Council meetings and otherwise substitute in the Mayor's absence. Four Council members are District representatives who are chosen from voters within the district. The other two Council members are At-large representatives who are elected town-wide. Elections are held in odd-numbered years. Terms are staggered so that voters fill three or four of the seats every two years.
The Town of Cary uses the Council-manager form of government based on State law. The elected Council hires the Manager, Town Attorney and Town Clerk. The manager is responsible for hiring and overseeing other Town employees. |
