Operations

The Cary Fire/Rescue Department provides fire suppression, emergency medical service in a first responder capacity, and technical rescue within the Town's corporate limits. The department will also, upon request, provide mutual-aid with surrounding departments. The department currently has seven fire stations located throughout the town. Suppression staff is organized into three rotating shifts that provide 24-hour coverage.

Fire Suppression

Fighting FireThe Cary Fire/Rescue provides fire suppression for the town utilizing seven fire stations. Firefighting is performed using seven engines, three aerial platforms, two truck companies, two rescue companies and a brush truck. Water for firefighting is supplied through a municipal water system that places hydrants 500 feet apart. Engine companies are staffed with five personnel. Staffing is made up of a captain, an engineer, and three firefighters. Engine companies are never allowed to operate with less than a crew of four. Aerial platforms and truck companies are staffed with a crew of four. The two rescue companies are staffed with an officer, drive and one firefighter. The brush truck, which is used for brush and woods fires, is unmanned until needed.

Emergency Medical Response

All Cary Fire/Rescue firefighters are Emergency Medical Technician and ALS certified. The department responds to all life threatening medical emergencies as ALS first responders. Beyond basic life support, firefighters are trained to defibrillate and administer life-saving drugs and procedures. Ambulance service is provided by Cary EMS, a volunteer/paid service that is also accredited.

Technical Rescue

WMD DrillCary Fire/Rescue firefighters are certified as Emergency Rescue Technicians. Firefighters are trained and equipped to perform vehicle extrication, trench rescue, confined-space rescue, high angle rescue, and water rescue. Truck companies and rescue companies carry the extrication and high angle equipment. The trench rescue and confined space equipment is stored and transported in enclosed trailers. Water rescues are performed utilizing two boats along with swift water rescue equipment. The department also has 24 highly trained members to help staff the multi-jurisdictional Urban Search and Rescue Team. The team, which specializes in structural collapse, is available for immediate deployment anywhere in the state upon being activated by the North Carolina Development of Emergency Management.
