The Engineering Department makes improvements
to the storm sewer system to prevent flooding and property damage. Improvements
include catch basins, pipes (excluding residential rain gutters and downspouts),
sewers, drains, culverts, open ditches, creeks and rivers that carry surface
water and unpolluted water.

Gatehouse Drive/ Olary Drive Storm Drainage Improvements
Overview
This project consists of replacing old undersized culverts under the requirements of Policy Statement 146. This policy allows the public to request that existing storm drainage systems that are undersized and are creating problems on private property to be replaced with appropriately sized pipes/structures.
Schedule
This project is currently under construction and is Scheduled for completion by July 2007.

Lake Wheeler Hydrogeological Evaluation
Overview
The Town of Cary is currently performing a hydrogeological evaluation including ground water modeling of the Lake Wheeler area to ascertain aquifer characteristics and the inter-relationship between ground water, surface water, and pumping from residential and commercial well supplies. This is being performed to assess the potential for subsurface aqueous interception from any potential, deleterious substances emanating from surface water input.
Schedule
This project is currently underway and is Scheduled for completion by December 2007.

Nitrogen Removal BMP Design & Installation
Overview
The Town of Cary received a $400,000 grant from the North Carolina Ecosystem Enhancement Program to design and construct nitrogen removal best management practice (BMP) devices along an unnamed tributary to Swift Creek on Town of Cary owned property. These devices, once constructed, will greatly reduce nitrogen intake into Swift Creek and will enhance water quality flowing from and through the TCAP portion of Cary.
Schedule
This project is currently under construction and is Scheduled for completion by November 2007.

Storm Drain Infrastructure Inventory, Phase IV
Overview
The Town of Cary is undertaking a project designed to obtain an updated and accurate inventory of its storm drainage system. This is a requirement of the Town's NPDES permit. Survey crews will be investigating and noting the location and condition of the Town's storm drainage system. To date, 30.4 square miles of the town have been surveyed. When this phase of the project is completed, 43.8 square miles (82 percent) will have been inventoried.
Schedule
This phase of the project is Scheduled to be completed by December 2008.

Stream Restoration Unnamed Tributary to Swift Creek
Overview
As part of the on-site mitigation for stream impacts associated with the widening of SW Maynard Road, the Town of Cary is restoring 2,300 feet of degraded channel of an un-named tributary to Swift Creek located on Town property. The channel has been heavily impacted by upstream development within the watershed and is entrenched and over-widened. The channel will be restored through the establishment of a stable channel with pattern, dimension and profile suitable for the valley type, level of development within the watershed and site specific conditions. Approximately 300 feet of stream restoration credits will be used to mitigate for the road widening. The remaining 2,000 feet of credits will be banked for future use by the Town. These banked credits will save the Town money and help speed the permitting process for future projects. As part of the construction, the Town will be upgrading the Greenway which parallels the stream restoration project.
Schedule
This project is currently under construction and is Scheduled for completion by November 2007.

Walnut Creek Stream Restoration
Overview
As part of the Town's ongoing efforts to minimize flooding, improve the environment and be a proactive steward of the environment, the Town of Cary is restoring a segment of Walnut Creek between Clay Street and NE Maynard Road. This restoration will alleviate significant degraded channel issues, unstable stream banks, and, will slow down otherwise fast-flowing water in the stream resulting from peak rainfall events all of which should dramatically improve and minimize flood potential.
Schedule
This project is currently underway and is Scheduled for completion by April, 2008.
