Overview (Spring 2007)

The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to add two lanes toward the center of U.S. 1/64 from Tryon Road almost to Interstate 40 while extending auxiliary lanes at the outer edge between ramps in both directions. This means the highway will have six lanes, plus ramp-to-ramp auxiliary lanes in each direction.

The state Department of Transportation has the latest news, a detailed schedule and other information about the project.

The Town of Cary is advancing $8.7 million so that major changes to the Walnut Street and Cary Parkway interchanges can occur as the highway is widened. This will lessen inconvenience to motorists and allow for development at the interchanges.

Construction began in early 2005 and is scheduled to take about two years. The project includes noise walls in places.

Work at the interchanges will include a new ramp off southbound 1/64 separating traffic exiting onto Walnut Street from traffic that is headed to Buck Jones Road or Crossroads Plaza. Highway officials say the weaving and merging currently required is perplexing and potentially hazardous.

Landscaping Plan

NCDOT has delayed landscaping plans for US1/64 this year due to the drought.
