U.S. 1/64 (Map)

Currently

  • Four lanes with median
  • Auxiliary lanes between the Tryon and Cary Parkway ramps traveling northbound and between the Walnut Street and Cary Parkway ramps traveling southbound
Future
  • Six lanes, each 12-feet wide, with concrete Jersey-type barrier in the middle and 10-foot wide breakdown lanes on each side of the barrier
  • Auxiliary lanes extended the full length between Tryon Road and Walnut Street in both directions
  • Pedestrian crossing over U.S. 1/64 connecting MacDonald Woods Park and Kids Together Park
Cary Parkway Interchange (Map)

Currently

  • Traffic on Cary Parkway traveling from Kildaire Farm Road toward Tryon Road crosses bridge and turns left to go north on U.S. 1/64 toward Walnut Street.
  • Traffic on Cary Parkway traveling from Tryon Road toward Kildaire Farm Road crosses bridge and turns left to go south on U.S. 1/64 toward MacGregor Village.
Future
  • Traffic on Cary Parkway traveling from Kildaire Farm Road toward Tryon Road crosses bridge and turns right onto new loop that swings around under bridge for free flow onto U.S. 1/64 headed toward Walnut Street.
  • Traffic on Cary Parkway traveling from Tryon Road toward Kildaire Farm Road crosses bridge and turns right onto new loop that swings around under bridge for free flow onto U.S. 1/64 toward MacGregor Village.
Other Improvements
  • Widen both 1/64 off ramps, add turn lanes at intersections
  • Widen Cary Parkway bridge for new loop heading toward Walnut Street
Walnut Street Interchange (Map)

Currently

  • Southbound 1/64 traffic (headed away from Interstate 40) exits before the Walnut Street bridge to reach Walnut Street.
Future
  • Southbound 1/64 traffic crosses under Walnut Street bridge and exits onto new ramp curving back around to Walnut Street opposite Donaldson Drive. (Notes: Existing southbound exit ramp remains, but provides access only to Buck Jones Road and to Crossroads Plaza. New southbound entrance ramp will go beside new southbound exit loop.)
Walnut Street
  • Widen from near Kingston Ridge Road to existing bridge over U.S. 1/64
  • Install traffic island from new Donaldson Drive intersection to Buck Jones Road to reduce accidents by preventing left turns
