Tryon Road Widening Construction Journal
March/April 2008

With temperatures starting to rise and daylight hours increasing the construction crews are gearing up to make the final push to completion this summer. The three critical areas of the project are detailed below.

1. Lynn’s Branch Culvert (near Cary Parkway):

The double-box culvert at Lynn’s Branch is complete. The pictures below show the fill being placed and compacted over the new culvert. Crews will now start to build up the 18” pavement section, the concrete curb and gutter, the 5’ wide sidewalk, and the 18’ wide median.

The completed roadbed can be seen in the distance and gives a sense of how the road will connect as it comes over the culvert.

2. Long Branch Culvert (between Kielser Drive and Thornewood Drive):

As seen on the right side of the photo, traffic has shifted to travel over the recently completed northern half of the culvert. Crews will now begin excavating on the south side of the roadway to build the new culvert. Once complete, the stream will be diverted into the new culvert and the old pipe will be removed.

3. Paving the north-side of Tryon Road:

With the completion of the northern portion of both culverts, crews are continuing to grade and pave the north-side of Tryon Road. Crews are seen placing blocks and backfill on one of the projects three retaining walls. Each block is 3 ½ feet tall and deep. The roadbed for the west-bound traffic can be seen in the near left side of the picture, while the completed east-bound road is seen in the farther left side of the picture.
