AMIS

Overview

The Town of Cary is implementing an Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) System. This will include the replacement of all residential water meters and most commercial and industrial water meters.

The new water meters will contain a transmitter that will remotely send meter readings to the Town’s Finance Department. This will improve the effectiveness of the Town’s meter reading and customer service operations while enhancing the overall quality of service to utility customers.

Benefits of the Town’s AMI System include:

  1. Reducing the cost of customer service operations, including special meter reads
  2. Reducing customer service call volume, particularly related to meter readings, estimates and high bill concerns
  3. Reducing the need for field visits by Town employees
  4. Enabling proactive customer service practices (such as notification of possible leaks)
  5. Reducing the amount of unaccounted water loss due to theft or inaccurate meters
  6. Identifying noncompliance with odd-even irrigation ordinances
  7. Providing staff with daily or better consumption records for each account
  8. Increasing billable revenues, accurately records consumption, and reduces unaccounted for water loss
  9. Providing accurate, useful information for forecasting, facilities planning, rate setting, infiltration and exfiltration management

Schedule

The Town will issue a request for proposals for this project in late 2007.

This project will be implemented in two phases. Construction of Phase 1 will take about 12 months to complete. Construction of Phase 2 will begin upon completion of Phase 1 and also has a 12-month duration. All construction is scheduled to be completed within two years.  See a map of Phase 1 and Phase 2 locations.
