Awards Received
The N.C. Chapter of the American Planning Association awarded its 2002 Outstanding Planning Award to the Town of Cary for its Open Space and Historic Resources Plan. The award was presented at the association's annual convention, which was held May 16-18 in New Bern.

The planning association cited the Open Space and Historic Resources Plan's green infrastructure concept, which supports an interconnected system of open space to create a framework for conservation. The association also praised the plan's application of ecological planning principles, its transferability to other agencies and local governments, and its identification of open space corridors for future ecological restoration.

Capital Area Preservation presented the Town of Cary with its 2002 Anthemion Award in recognition of the Open Space and Historic Resources Plan. The presentation was at the organization's 30th annual meeting, which was held June 20 at the State Capitol.

Capital Area Preservation cited the plan's analysis of rural and historic landscapes in Western Wake County. The effort included a study to identify priorities for preservation within the Green Level and Carpenter Crossroads historic districts, which are two National Register districts within Cary's planning jurisdiction. Capital Area Preservation also cited the plan's "preservation toolbox' of landowner preservation incentives.

The Anthemion Award is inspired by the classical design encircling the Capitol dome and honors commitment to historic preservation in Wake County.
