Hunter Street Homes

Ground broke in August 2001 for four single-family Craftsman-inspired houses where two small dilapidated apartment buildings were demolished in a neighborhood south of downtown. The three-bedroom, two-bath homes include 9-foot ceilings, front porches, hardwood foyers and outside storage. Prices range upward to $128,000. The houses were completed in early 2002 and are occupied.

The homes will complete redevelopment of a lot that for years was a neighborhood eyesore. Wake County spent federal community development funds to buy the property and demolish the two small apartment buildings in January 2000 after the Town of Cary condemned them. Meetings with neighbors were held to find out what kind of housing they would prefer.

The Town Council authorized spending up to $137,000 for fee reimbursement, second mortgage loans and sewer costs. DHIC, a non-profit organization in Raleigh, was selected to develop the property.
