Frequently Asked Questions - Financial Matters 1. When would those annexed begin paying taxes to Cary? The schedule page includes details on when the first property tax bills would be mailed, when taxes would be due and when they would become delinquent. Property taxes not paid by the due date (early January) are assessed an interest charge of 2 percent for January and 3/4 of 1 percent for each month thereafter. (Cary's 2003-2004 tax rate - 42 cents per $100 worth of property.) 2. How are Town taxes collected? Wake
County handles all assessment, valuation, billing and collection
of property taxes for the Town of Cary. Town taxes will be shown separately
on the tax bill mailed by Wake County. The Town of Cary is a satellite
office for Wake County property tax collection. Real property and registered
motor vehicle taxes can be paid at Cary Town Hall between 8 a.m. and
5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 3. What about taxes or fees on vehicles? Individual statements are issued for each vehicle approximately three months after registration takes place. Town of Cary taxes will be assessed for registrations occurring after the effective date of annexation. No additional prorated bills will be generated due to the annexation. The Town of Cary also levies an additional vehicle license fee per vehicle ($15 in 2003-2004) that is included on the separate motor vehicle tax bill. Questions about Bank Draft for Utility Customers 4. How does the bank draft program work? You will receive your bill each month as usual. We will notify your bank, savings and loan, or credit union (you choose) of the bill amount. Your bank will automatically deduct it from your account. 5. When will the payment be drafted from my bank account? The amount of your bill will be drafted from your account on the actual due date. This keeps your money working for you until the due date. Your utility bill will show the date and the amount to be drafted. 6. How will I know if my payment is being deducted from my account? Automatic drafting is usually effective with the second billing period after you have signed up for draft service. After you sign up for the program, look at your next utility bill. If we are drafting your account, a payment message will appear on the bill. If no message appears, we are still processing your request and you will need to pay the bill as you have been doing. 7. What record will I have showing that I paid my bill? In addition to your utility bill, your bank statement will include a record of payment. 8. Can I use the automatic payment service to pay for more than one Town account? Yes. You can pay for several bills from the same account each month. You can include several different service addresses. 9. What happens if I change banks? Let us know. We will need a new authorization form from you to continue the automatic payment service. 10. How do I sign up? Just complete and sign the Bank Draft Authorization Form and return it with your next bill payment. Be sure to include a deposit slip or a voided check for the bank account you want to use. 11. What
if I have a problem with the bill amount? 12. What if I have a question? Just call us at (919) 469-4050 or visit the Finance Department in Town Hall Building A, 316 N. Academy St. Questions may be e-mailed to cindy.nicolaisen@townofcary.org. Other Financial Questions 13. What building permit fees apply in Cary? The Town's Inspections
and Permits Department has information on building
permit fees.
