PROJECT TITLE:   Large Valve Repair/Replacement

RESPONSIBLE DEPARTMENT:   Engineering

PROJECT FUNDING:   $200,000

FIRST YEAR ESTIMATED OPERATING COSTS:   None

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This project provides for the repair and replacement of large valves in the Town’s water distribution system.  Large valves are defined as being 30-inches in diameter or greater and are located at key junctions in the water distribution system.  Valves of this nature are typically used to isolate pressure zones, long runs of large pipe, and sources of potable water.  Total project cost is estimated to be $400,000.  Appropriations through FY 2008 total $200,000.  The FY 2009 appropriation of $200,000 represents remaining funding necessary for project completion.

PROJECT JUSTIFICATION:

The failure of large diameter valves to operate as intended can cause difficulties in the operation of the water system as system failures typically occur at critical locations for isolation of large segments of the system.  The inability to reliably isolate sections of the system may make it difficult, if not impossible, to operate as intended and to properly maintain many portions of the system.

PROJECT LOCATION:

This project will occur throughout the Town of Cary’s water distribution system.
