PROJECT TITLE:   Cary/Apex Water Treatment Plant –

Phase III Expansion and Improvements (From 40 to 56 MGD)

RESPONSIBLE DEPARTMENT:   Engineering

PROJECT FUNDING:   $300,000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This project provides for the expansion of the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility from 40 MGD to 56 MGD.  Specifically, the project provides for the addition of two super-pulsators, four filters, raw water ozone and raw and finished water pumps and chemical system improvements.

Total project cost is currently estimated to be $54,433,864.  FY 2009 funding of $300,000 addresses regulatory and permitting issues associated with the expansion/improvements.  Additional funding of $8,090,080 in FY 2011 and $45,843,784 in FY 2012 will be necessary for project completion.  These funds will support engineering evaluation, analysis, design and construction.

A portion of this project’s cost is recoverable under the Morrisville utility merger cost recovery provision.  Additionally, as with all Cary/Apex Water Treatment Plant projects, the Town of Apex is responsible for 23% of the project cost while the Town of Cary addresses the remaining 77%.

PROJECT JUSTIFICATION:

The expansion/improvements initiated via this project were identified in the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Plant Re-Rating and Capacity Study as necessary to appropriately meet projected treatment demands.
