Communications
Tower to replace water tower off Kildaire Farm Road
v
In June 2007, Town Council approved for Engineering to work with
Communications companies to replace water tower with a communications tower
creating an opportunity to create gateway/public art feature and visually
connecting to the Streetscapes project.

Staff reported that the Streetscape artist has been meeting
with the tower’s architect to integrate its look and feel with the Streetscape.
v
Streetscape artist Elizabeth Conner and architect will bring
a concept forward at a future meeting for PAAB’s review.

Spring Daze
2008 – Installation artist and PAAB participation at Festival

Staff presented a PowerPoint to the Board on Lily
Karmatz. Ms. Karmatz is an ikebana
artist and also works larger scale in the landscape.

Ms. Karmatz has agreed to work with our “Track Out” program,
Monday – Friday from

There will also be an adult workshop on Tuesday, April 22

Staff wanted to bring this information to the Board since
they would likely be asked questions during Spring Daze Festival.

Staff also wanted to make the distinction between temporary
art (up less than 90 days) which comes under the Exhibition Program and does
not come before the Board for approval. This
project is anticipated to be up less than 90 days.

graphic design for the bridge would be modified

the animation and suggestion of movement is beautiful

the face of the smooth concrete, like a comet across the night sky.

structure in the courtyard

The shade
structure would be located in courtyard on the Town Hall Campus

The structure
would incorporate previously approved design concept for Town Hall project.

The Board was in
agreement that the shelter project would be a better design element for the
Town Hall Campus.
ACTION: Smythe
Richbourg made a motion to recommend to Council that Catherine Widgery be hired
to create a pavilion in the courtyard based on the original design concept
approved by the Public Art Advisory Board and Town Council. The design should be interesting from inside
and outside of the buildings, as well as ground level to the third floor
looking down onto the structure. Ginger
Hayes seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

from Representative Organizations

Planning for the
Cary Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition is moving along. The project website www.carysculpture.org is scheduled to
launch on
v
CVA has received
positive community feedback about the placement of Ecclesiastes/War Wagon and
looked into the possibility of making the piece a permanent placement at
Page-Walker Arts and
v
CVA explained
they were committed to giving $5,000 and the Friends of Page-Walker were giving
$2,000 towards the purchase of this piece.
Should the Town be looking at purchasing art? Discussion followed and generally the Board
felt it was better to be involved in public art projects at the early stage of
design so that artwork could be integrated and most cost effective. There was less support for purchasing
artwork. There were questions on the
maintenance of the piece and staff is having it evaluated.

building, and group coloring sessions result in large murals that pay tribute
to the humanity in all.

creating meaningful places throughout the US including recent works for
Pennsylvania Station, New York City, The City of Denver, The California Museum
of Science, Los Angeles and the Federal Courthouse, Sacramento, the American
Red Cross Headquarters, and the National Academies of Science, Washington,
