A.         Call to Order – Carol Aupperle, Chair

           

B.         Roll Call

·         Noting those absent

Ginger Castle; Smythe Richbourg; Lauren Mincey, Teen Council Representative;

 

·         Noting a quorum is present

Quorum was present at 6:15 pm

 

C.         Adoption of Agenda

·         Approval of DRAFT agenda

v      Under New Business “Community Tree Project” and “Board Terms” were added.

 

ACTION:  Pat Hudson made a motion to approve the agenda with the addition under New Business.  Eric Forehand seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

D.         Minutes

·         Approval of DRAFT 19 September 2007 minutes

ACTION:  Eric Forehand made a motion to approve the September 19, 2007 minutes.  Pat Hudson seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

E.         New Business

·         Community Tree Project

v      Carol Aupperle reminded the Board that it is time to start thinking about an ornament for the Community Tree Project.  Ginger Hayes agreed to look over the requirements and possible make an ornament.

 

·         Board Terms

v      Staff explained letters will be mailed this week for those who need to re-apply because of terms expiring or if you missed three meetings or more.

v      This Board will also have a new council liaison that will be determined by Council.

 

·         Artists Registry and Image Bank

v      Staff explained the artist’s registry and image bank was a goal FY ‘08.

v      At this time there are 110 artists from diverse geographic locations and working in a variety of media.

v      Staff will begin to review applications and bring the information to the Board after the first of the year.

v      Artists will be able to update their information and submit new images of their work on a yearly base.

v      Staff will advertise every two years for new artists.

 

 

F.         Old Business

·         Downtown Streetscapes Project – Update

v      Staff distributed a packet of information on the artwork for the Downtown Streetscapes Project at the 60% phase.

v      The artist will be back in November to meet with this Board and discuss the new elements of the project.

 

·         US 1/64 Pedestrian Greenway Bridge - Update

v      Staff will deliver packet of information to NC DOT next week for the Encroachment Agreement process. 

 

·         Old Cary Elementary School -  Update

v      The public meeting on October 2, 2007 went well and the artists are now on board.

v      Staff will go to Council in November to present the program plan and options.

 

·         Town Hall Campus - Update

v      Catherine Widgery will be here Tuesday, October 30, 2007 all day for a site visit.

v      Ms. Widgery will tour the Town Hall Campus and discuss her design concept.

v      We should know shortly after her visit if there is potential for her design concept to work with the built campus.

 

·         Bartley Park - Update

v      Staff met with Vollis Simpson and discussed his kinetic sculpture and the Park’s time frame, which could be late 2008-09.

v      Staff and Landscape Designer met with William Moore and discussed the farm’s history, agriculture themes, and farm animals.  Mr. Moore is working on the proposal.

 

·         Walnut Street Park - Update

v      The permitting process is complete.  There will be a three month bid process, with the project being complete next year.

 

·         Review current PAAB Goals

v      Board will need to begin to update Board goals. 

v      Staff will also begin to draft Council report of Board’s activities FY ‘08

v      Board began listing some of its activities – Staff will develop a draft

Ø       Dog Park dedication

Ø       Windplow Cary Visual Art artwork dedication

 

 

G.         Reports from Representative Organizations

·         Cary Visual Art (CVA) – Pat Hudson

v      Take a Seat Auction – The artwork auction raised approximately $7800.  The Walking Chair by Chad Bush won the People’s Choice Award.

v      Panther Creek project in Alston Activity CenterGreensboro artist Erik Beerbower was selected for the project.  He is working on design concepts that will be incorporated into the sidewalk and greenway trail junction.

v      The CVA Art Ball is coming up Saturday, November 3, 2007.  The Art Ball raises funds for public art in Cary.  Sponsorships and tickets are available.

v      Windplow Dedication – CVA and the Stone Creek Village merchants invite you to attend the dedication celebration for Windplow.  The event will take place on Thursday, November 15, 2007 from 4:00 pm5:30pm at Stonehaven Jewelry Gallery at 101 Ledge Stone Way.  Food and beverages will be provided.  Live musical entertainment will be provided by Elmer Gibson and Loir Barmer.  Door prizes will be awarded.

v      The next Wishing Well exhibition reception will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2007 at 3:00 pm in the main lobby of WakeMed Cary Hospital.  The current exhibition features artwork by students from Adams Elementary.

 

·         Fine Arts League of Cary (FALC) – Carl Regutti

v      Carl Regutti inquired if everyone was still receiving the “Sketchpad” publication.  The Board was still receiving the information.

v      He reported FALC had a brainstorming meeting and following were ideas:

Ø       Cary Art Loop needs more advertising.

Ø       Requesting individual artist working space.  FALC had suggested the Town purchase the Cary Efficiency Motel on Old Apex Road for artists studios.

Ø       A brochure for public art in Cary.

Ø       Yearly grant from the Town of Cary to FALC.  This would allow FALC to purchase artwork from FALC show to donate to the Town.

 

·         Other Organizations

 

H.         Public Speaks Out (opportunity for guests and members to address Board – limit 5 minutes per                 speaker)

 

I.          Adjourn

v      Ginger Hayes made a motion for the meeting to adjourn at 7:25pm.
