A.         Call to Order – Carol Aupperle, Chair

           

B.         Roll Call

·         Noting those absent

Eric Forehand; Elizabeth Ray; Lejandro DeRomas, Teen Council Representative; Lauren Mincey, Teen Council Representative

 

·         Noting a quorum is present

Quorum was present at 6:20 pm

 

C.         Adoption of Agenda

·         Approval of DRAFT agenda

Under new business remove Review Parkside Town Commons (Alston Activity Center) application and Review Potential Public Art Projects ’09 Capital Improvement Budget (CIB).  These items will be on a later agenda. 

ACTION:  Smythe Richbourg made a motion to approve the agenda.  Pat Hudson seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

D.         Minutes

·         Approval of DRAFT 18 July 2007 minutes

ACTION:  Carl Regutti made a motion to approve the July 18, 2007 minutes.  Pat Hudson seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

E.         New Business

·         Review 60% design – Streetscape artist Elizabeth Conner

o        Streetscape artist Elizabeth Conner and Nik Nikolaev with Arcadis Design Firm spoke with the Board on how the project is developing and discussed design concepts for integrated public art.  They distributed handouts.

o        They discussed different types of materials that would be used for the streets and sidewalks.

o        The round-a-bouts are a new concept for this area.  They will help reduce the speed of the vehicle traffic and make the area pedestrian friendly.  The round-a-bouts are designed for emergency and public transportation vehicles.  Nik suggested restricting the large tractor trailers in the downtown area because of their size.

o        There will be 14 bus shelters with four being placed near Academy and Chatham.

o        A water feature is being researched for the Town Square – design concepts passed around

o        The next public meeting will be in the Fall. 

 

 

 

F.         Old Business

·         Walnut Street Park – Update

o        The bid documents will be going out in September.

 

·         US 1/64 Pedestrian Greenway bridge – Update

o        Artist is currently working through attachment design issues with bridge engineer.

 

·         Old Cary Elementary School – Update

o        The next public meeting will be October 2, 2007. The location has not been determined at this time.

 

·         Town Hall Campus – Update

o        Catherine Widgery will look at visiting in late October or early November.

 

·         Reminder – Lazy Daze – August 25

o        There is a need for afternoon volunteers to man the Public Art Advisory Board information booth.

o        Staff will have the questionnaire and materials ready.

o        The Board suggested having one feedback form for all the civic organizations, which would provide the information the organizations need and the public would not have to continue to take surveys.

o        The Board suggested having one of the questions on the feedback form, “do you have an organization that we can come and talk too.”

 

·         Review current PAAB Goals

o        Reviewed goals.

 

G.         Reports from Representative Organizations

·         Cary Visual Art (CVA) – Pat Hudson

o        Temporary Community Arts Exhibition “Take a Seat”

Ø       A special exhibition of select artworks is planned for the Lazy Daze Festival on Saturday, August 25th.  Be sure to look for the exhibition near Old Cary Elementary School

Ø       The entire Take a Seat artworks will be auctioned to raise money for public art in Cary.  The auction will take place on Thursday, September 20th (note: date change) in conjunction with a Business After Hours event at 11000 Regency Parkway adjacent to the Booth Amphitheatre at Regency Park.

 

o        Policy for Working with Nongovernmental Organizations – CVA provides consulting services to support public art in Cary.  We have developed a policy to help encourage organizations and developers to pursue public art projects in Cary.

 

·         Fine Arts League of Cary (FALC) – Carl Regutti

o        The “Sketchpad” will be combining August and September into one publication.

 

·         Other Organizations

 

H.         Public Speaks Out (opportunity for guests and members to address Board – limit 5 minutes per                 speaker)

 

I.          Adjourn

o        Smythe Richbourg made a motion for the meeting to adjourn at 7:30pm.
