A.         Call to Order – Carol Aupperle, Chair

The meeting was called to order at 6:15 p.m. Smythe Richbourg arrived to the meeting at 6:27 p.m.

           

B.         Roll Call

C.         Adoption of Agenda

ACTION:  Julia Kunkel Morrison made a motion to adopt the agenda.  Ginger Hayes seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

D.         Minutes

·         Approval of DRAFT 16 August 2006 minutes

ACTION:  Carl Regutti made a motion to approve the minutes.  Pat Hudson seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

E.         New Business

·         Discuss CVA Art Crawl & Cary Art Loop

CVA will host the Art Crawl festival on Friday, September 29, 2006 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  The Art Crawl is a celebration of art and culture in downtown Cary.  The festival features guided tours of public art, artist demonstrations, children’s activities, live music, street performances and a silent auction of children’s artwork.

 

Public Art Advisory Board (PAAB) will have a table at this event and Carol Aupperle will email the Board requesting volunteers to staff the table.  The Cary Dog Park Artist, Rachel Herrick, will be on hand to talk about public art for the Dog Park and solicit community workshop participants.

 

·         Downtown Streetscape (discuss Goals & makeup of Artist Selection Panel)

Denise Dickens explained staff needs the Board to discuss broad goals considerations for the Downtown Streetscape Plan.  These ideas will be incorporated into the “Call to Artist.”  Staff will use list of broad consideration items discussed to develop specific goals.  PAAB discussed makeup of the Artist Selection Panel.  PAAB 2 representatives – Smythe Richbourg, chair; Carl Regutti, and Ginger Hayes will be the alternate. 

     

 

F.         Old Business

·         Update on US 1/64 Pedestrian Greenway Bridge, Walnut Street Park, Cary Dog Park, CVA artwork donation, Stone Creek Village

US 1/64 Pedestrian Greenway Bridge – will go before Planning and Development Committee next Thursday, September 28, 2006.

 

Walnut Street Park – Town Council accepted the recommendation to hire artist, Barbara Grygutis for the design team for Walnut Street Park.  The artist will be in town for 2 full days beginning on Monday, October 9, 2006.  There will be a public meeting on Monday, October 9, 2006 at Page-Walker Arts and History Center to gather community input.

 

Cary Dog Park – Town Council accepted the recommendation to commission artist, Rachel Herrick for the Cary Dog Park.  The artist will be conducting a two day workshop beginning Friday, October 20, 2006 at the Herb Young Community Center from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  The participants will meet again on Saturday, October 21, 2006.  This is a free workshop, but pre-registration is required.  Anyone interested can email carydogparkart@yahoo.com.

 

CVA Artwork Donation – Town Council accepted the 3 pieces donated by CVA and installation will begin shortly at the Town Hall Campus.

 

Stone Creek VillageTown Council accepted the recommendation of CVA’s donation of sculpture by artist Beverly Precious for the Stone Creek Village round-a-bout.

 

·         Review PAAB Goals

The Board reviewed the goals to ensure that these are being met.

 

G.         Reports from Representative Organizations

·         Cary Visual Art (CVA) – Pat Hudson

Lazy Daze – CVA hosted an information booth featuring a Cary public art trivia contest.  The activity booth Gary Colby was the winner of an original artwork by Lori Shepley.  Our children’s booth featured a popular arts activity in which participants created their own fans.

 

Temporary Community Arts Exhibition – CVA is planning a themed exhibition of unique artworks suitable for functional seating.  Community members will be encouraged to participate by creating their own artworks or using one of our available “chairs” for the foundation of their art.  The exhibition will launch at Spring Daze 2007 and close at Lazy Daze 2007.

 

10th Year Anniversary Art Ball – The Art Ball is planned for Saturday, November 4, 2006 at Preston wood Country Club.  Sponsorships and tickets are now available.  All proceeds benefit public art and education programs in Cary.  To learn more, please contact Laura Coats at 919-531-9149 or laura.coats@caryvisualart.org.

H.         Public Speaks Out - opportunity for guests and members to address Board – limit 5 minutes per speaker)

v      Julia Kunkel Morrison thanked Denise Dickens for all of her hard work preparing for Lazy Daze.  The Public Art Advisory Board tent was well organized.  The Board worked well as a team and the material was interesting and was easy to use when talking with visitors.

v      Denise Dickens will send the Board the summary of 145 comments from the public during Lazy Daze.

 

I.          Adjourn - time

ACTION:  Julia Kunkel Morrison made the motion for the meeting to adjourn and Smythe Richbourg seconded.  The meeting adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
