A.         Call to Order – Carol Aupperle, Chair
            The meeting was called to order at
6:15 p.m.

           

B.         Minutes

·         May 17, 2006
Smythe Richbourg made a motion to accept the May minutes.  Ella Williams seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

C.         New Business

·         CVA – Stone Creek Village Public Art ProjectReview/Action
In a PowerPoint presentation, CVA member Laura Coats presented CVA’s recommendation of “Windplow”, the sculpture designed (by Bev Precious) for the round-a-bout in Stone Creek Village.  This project will be jointly funded by McGinnis Development Group and Cary Visual Art.
ACTION:  Ella Williams made a motion that the PAAB endorse the sculpture and move forward with the project pending approval by necessary town departments.  Smythe Richbourg seconded the motion.  The motion carried by a unanimous vote.

·         Walnut Street Park Artist Selection Panel Recommendation Review/Action
Carol Aupperle advised board members that the artist selection panel recommended artist Barbara Grygutis for the Walnut Street Public Art project.  Once approved, Ms. Grygutis will work with the project landscape architect to integrate art into the design of the park.  Denise Dickens, Public Art Coordinator provided board members with photos of Ms. Grygutis’s work.
ACTION:  Smythe Richbourg made a motion that the PAAB endorse the Walnut Street Park Artist Selection Panel’s recommendation of Barbara Grygutis for this project.  The motion was seconded by Pat Hudson.  The motion carried by a unanimous vote.

·         Cary Dog Park Artist Selection Panel Recommendation – Review/Action
Carol Aupperle reported that Rachel Herrick (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) and Tom Kilian (Columbia, N.C.) were in the final rounds of the selection process.  This project proposes to recycle and reuse the Town’s surplus fire hydrants to create a new work of public art at Cary Dog Park.
ACTION:  Carol Aupperle made a motion that the PAAB endorse the Cary Dog Park Artist Selection Panel’s recommendation of Rachel Herrick for this project.  The motion was seconded by Ella Williams.  The motion carried by a unanimous vote.

 

·         CVA – paintings for donation to Town – Review/Action
Pat Hudson introduced three paintings, purchased by CVA to be offered to the Town for exhibit at Town Hall.  The paintings/artists offered are:  Muses II/Constance Pappalardo; Southern Lady/Elaine A. Wood and Just Another Day – Senegal/ Diana L. Coidan.
Denise Dickens, Public Art Coordinator reviewed the Town’s criteria for accepting artwork.
ACTION:  Pat Hudson made a motion that the PAAB accepted the three pieces of artwork for exhibit at Town Hall.  The motion was seconded by Smythe Richbourg.  The motion carried by a unanimous vote.

 

D.         Old Business

·         Art in storage and plans for returning it to display – Denise Dickens gave an update on the two Fred G. Bond busts; one has been installed at entrance to the newly renovated Bond Park boathouse and, once a location has been identified for the second bust, public works staff will do the installation.

·         Update on Town Hall project status of funding – Cultural Arts Manager Lyman Collins reported that staff is in the process of finalizing the settlement with Catherine Widgery, the artist selected to design public art for town hall campus.  Depending on the outcome of the settlement, staff may choose to continue with Ms. Widgery or consider other options.

·         US 1/64 Pedestrian Bridge – update – Public Art Coordinator Denise Dickens advised members that artist’s proposals were being considered for the artwork for this project.

·         Review PAAB Goals – Public Art Coordinator Denise Dickens reminded PAAB members to continue to review the goals and reminded them of the board’s purpose.

 

E.         Reports from Representative Organizations

·         Cary Visual Arts – Pat Hudson
Ms.
Hudson provided members with a July handout of current and proposed exhibits.  Ms. Hudson noted that CVA is developing a themed artwork exhibit…”Take a Seat” which proposes community involvement.  This exhibit is planned for April 2007-August 2007 and will coincide with Spring Daze and Lazy Daze.

·         Fine Arts League of Cary (FALC) – Ella Williams
Ms. Williams provided members with a July handout of current activities of the Fine Arts League of Cary.  Nineteen (19) FALC members were juried into the Markham Exhibit, currently at Town Hall.
A committee will choose six (6)
FALC artists who will commit to hang their work for three months, changing every quarter.

·         Other Organizations

·         Streetscape Plan – Council member Marla Dorrel presented PAAB members with a copy of the recent Streetscape Plan for their information.

·         Lazy Daze Poster Unveiling – Cultural Arts Manager Lyman Collins announce the July 28th unveiling of the 30th Lazy Daze poster by local artist Jerry Miller.  Additionally, there will be a display at Town Hall commemorating the 30 years of Lazy Daze and will feature artwork of previous Jerry Miller Award recipients.

F.         Adjourn – The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
