A.         Call to Order – Carol Aupperle, Chair

Carol Aupperle called the meeting to order at 6:15 pm.

           

B.         Roll Call

Absent – Larry Schessel

 

C.         Adoption of Agenda

            Carol Aupperle added Lazy Daze under Old Business.

 

ACTION: Smythe Richbourg made a motion to approve the August 16, 2006 agenda.  Ginger Hayes seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

D.         Minutes

·         Approval of DRAFT July 19, 2006 minutes

Correction to the minutes Ginger Hayes and Julia Kunkel Morrison were absent.

 

ACTION:  Carl Regutti made a motion to approve the July 19, 2006 minutes with the above corrections.  Julia Kunkel Morrison seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

E.         New Business

·         US 1/64 Pedestrian Greenway Bridge Review/Action

Denise Dickens gave a visual presentation to the Board on the proposals by the five finalists for the US 1/64 Pedestrian Greenway Bridge project.  Denise explained that all five finalists will be presented with Michael Stutz being recommended for the commission and Judy Bales being recommended as the alternate.  Staff will prepare a report that will go before the Planning and Development Committee in September and then to Council in October.

 

ACTION:  Smythe Richbourg made a motion that the PAAB accept the US 1/64 Pedestrian Greenway Bridge Artist Selection Panel’s recommendation of Michael Stutz for this project with Judy Bales being the alternate and forward that recommendation to Town Council for approval.  Julia Kunkel Morrison seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

·         Go over Policy Statement/ Rules of Order for TOC Boards/Commissions

Lyman Collins explained the revised policy statement was sent to the Board for review.  There are a couple of changes that will affect the Board, but it will give structure for all Boards and Commissions.

 

      He pointed out that on the matter before the Board, members will need to vote either yes or no.  Abstentions will be counted as yes.

 

·         Review Public Art Advisory Board Rules of Order -  Review/Action

Lyman Collins explained that to be consistent with other department boards and commissions the Public Art Advisory Board Rules of Order will need to be changed to say By-Laws instead of Rules of Order.  Also, rule #2: Agenda will need to be updated to reflect additional items may be added to the agenda, if the majority of members votes in favor.  Staff will make the change and provide the Board with copies.

 

ACTION:  Carl Regutti made a motion to accept the new by-laws with changes.   Julia Kunkel Morrison seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

F.         Old Business

·         Update on Town Hall project

Lyman Collins reported that Catherine Widgery has agreed to accept the Town’s settlement for the Gates of Light project.  The Town has agreed to meet Ms. Widgery’s expenses as to date.  The Town has also repaid Cary Visual Art for their contribution and the project is in the closing phase.

 

·         Update on Walnut Street Park, Cary Dog Park, CVA artwork donation, Stone Creek Village

Denise Dickens reported that the donation of paintings and the donation of the sculpture for Stone Creek Village by Cary Visual Art are on the consent agenda for the Planning and Development Committee scheduled for August 24, 2006 at noon in the Council Chambers.

 

The Walnut Street Park Artist selection for design team and the public art at the Cary Dog Park are on the same agenda for discussion.  The Board requested staff send a reminder of this meeting.  

 

·         Review PAAB Goals

Denise Dickens passed around a sheet for everyone to record their hours where they had volunteered or attending meetings in regards to Public Art Advisory Board.  Carol Apperle reminded the Board that a number of tonight’s agenda items are related to the PAAB’s stated goals for this year.

 

·         Lazy Daze

Carol Aupperle asked the Board members to sign-up for a two hour time slot to work Lazy Daze.  She explained the location of the booth would be at the Old Cary Elementary School.

 

G.         Reports from Representative Organizations

·         Cary Visual Art – Pat Hudson

Lazy Daze – Cary Visual Art will provide a children’s activity during the festival in August.

 

Art Crawl – CVA will host the Art Crawl Festival on Friday, September 29th from 5pm – 7:30 pm.  The Art Crawl is a celebration of art and culture in downtown Cary.  The festival features guided tours of public art, artist demonstrations, children’s activities, live music, street performance, and a silent auction of children’s artwork.

 

CVA Young Ambassadors - CVA is recruiting high school students to become involved in the public art process and to volunteer for events and projects throughout the year.  For more information, please contact Lauren Autore at 919-531-8149 or lauren.autore@caryvisualart.org.

 

10th Year Anniversary Art Ball - The 10th annual Cary Art Ball is planned for Saturday, November 4th at Prestonwood County Club.  Sponsorships and tickets are now available.  For more information, please contact Laura Coats at 919-531-9149 or laura.coats@caryvisualart.org.

 

·         Fine Arts League of Cary – Ella Williams

The Fine Arts League has canceled meetings in August.  The guest speaker for September 28th is Blue Greenberg, an active journalist for the Herald Sun where she writes a weekly column about art in the triangle.   She is intending to give FALC members pointers on the Triangle Art Scene.

FALC volunteers were appreciative of the opportunity to participate in the Sister Cities Exchange Markham Exhibit.  Many members continue to serve on various Town of Cary Committees representing the Fine Arts League of Cary.
