CALL
TO ORDER
–
Carol Aupperle, Chair
Carol Aupperle announced that Rajesh Patel has resigned from the Board as of
last week. Carol read the
following for Rajesh:
“Sadly,
our board has lost another member, Raj Patel.
Tonight, I want to publicly thank Raj for his
outstanding efforts on behalf of
public art in Cary. Raj donated
untold hours to developing a computer-animated
presentation of the Gates of Light
sculpture, which provided citizens with a virtual opportunity to experience this
amazing interactive sculpture.
Since it appears that the artwork will not be constructed in Cary,
Raj’s virtual tour
may be the only opportunity anyone
ever has to interact with the piece. In
addition, Raj brought a tremendous
level of thoughtfulness to the
discussions at this table, and his input will be sorely missed.”
Nancy Novell explained that the Town is considering applications for two Public
Art Advisory Board positions,
which should be appointed soon by
Council.
B. MINUTES
·
June 15, 2005
Julia Kunkel Morrison made a motion to approve the July minutes.
Smythe Richbourg seconded the motion.
The
motion passed unanimously.
C. CONSIDERATION
OF PAINTING DONATION – Dan
Kelley
· “Carpenter
Farm Supply Co.” by Dan Kelley
(See attached photo of painting)
Carol
Aupperle welcomed and introduced Dan Kelley to the Board.
Mr. Kelley gave a brief background on
himself and
explained that he recently moved to the Carpenter Upchurch area.
This is where he discovered
the Carpenter
Farm Supply Company. After driving
by the store several time, he decided to do a painting.
Once the painting was complete he wasn’t sure what to do with the
piece. He decided that if he donated
the piece to
the Town it would help preserve the history of these old stores.
Julia Kunkel Morrison provided
the Board
with history of the “Carpenter Farm Supply Company.”
Nancy Novell discussed the Review Criteria
of artwork
with the Board. Carol explained the
Public Art Master Plan does not have a section that addresses
donations
from the general public. Carol asked
if staff had a vision of where this painting would be placed.
Nancy
explained there are various possibilities and one area developing quickly could
be the new Town Hall
Campus. The
Board felt this piece reflected Cary’s history, but was unclear on how to
approach other pieces
that may come
before this Board from private citizens as donations.
It was suggested that the Board devote
some time on
this area and develop criteria for pieces of this nature.
ACTION: Carl Regutti
made the motion to recommend to Council that the Town accept the oil painting,
“Carpenter
Farm Supply Co.” by Dan Kelley. He
also recommended that the painting be placed on the
Town Hall
Campus with proper signage of the artist, along with historical record kept by
staff. Julia Kunkel
Morrison
seconded the motion. The motion
passed unanimously.

the glass. The final shop drawings

CVA
DOWNTOWN
TEMPORARY ART EXHIBITION '05-'06 –
Laura Coats, CVA
·
Laura Coats presented a slide
presentation on the proposed temporary art exhibition for 2005-2006.
She also
explained over 700 letters were mailed to property owners, as well as tenants
that live in the downtown area.
Below
is the letter that was sent:
“Dear Community Member:
Cary Visual Art, Inc. (CVA) is a nonprofit organization that supports public art
placements and education
programs. Our mission is to promote,
inspire, encourage, and support visual art for uplifting the human spirit
in the Cary community. Since our
founding in 1996, we have placed over 30 artworks in Cary.
CVA also
hosts a number of community arts events to promote appreciation for public art
among community members
of all ages.
We are currently planning a temporary exhibition of artwork along Academy
Street. The Downtown Cary
Sculpture Walk will feature a selection of artworks for a one-year exhibition
beginning this summer. The
purpose of the exhibit is to educate the community about public art through the
temporary presentation of
artworks in a variety of styles and media.
CVA is requesting that the Town of Cary consider approval to place the one-year
temporary public art
exhibition in the downtown area. The
Town seeks community input prior to the placement of public art,
and your input concerning this exhibition is encouraged.
For specific questions about the artwork and site
placements, contact Laura Coats at 531-9149 or Laura.Coats@caryvisualarts.org.
The request for the Downtown Cary Temporary Art Exhibition will appear as an
agenda item for review at the
next Public Art Advisory Board meeting on Wednesday, July 20, 2005.
The meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. at
the Temporary Council Chambers in the Herb Young Community Center, 101 Wilkinson
Avenue, Cary. At
this meeting we will show photos of the proposed public art works and will
discuss the requested site
placements. The photos are also
available online at www.townofcary.org/boards/publicart/2005/agenda.htm.
The Public Art Advisory Board will determine its recommendation regarding
CVA’s request for approval of the
temporary art exhibition. You are
encouraged to attend this meeting and become involved in the dialogue.
If
you would like an opportunity to share your comments and/or concerns by speaking
at the meeting, or if you
are unable to attend the meeting but would like your comments heard, please
e-mail or call Nancy Novell,
Public Art Coordinator at 465-4791 or nancy.novell@townofcary.org.”

TRANSPORTATION DESIGN EXHIBIT AND PUBLIC FORUM
– Nancy Novell
Nancy
Novell thanked Julia Kunkel Morrison and Larry Schessel for volunteering to help
hang this exhibit at Herb
Young Community Center. Nancy
explained the public meeting that was suggested to coincide with the Council
meeting will have to be moved because
of timing. The meeting may have to take place is September. Staff
met
with representatives from Planning,
PRCR and Engineering Departments to show them examples of the public art
works highlighted in the exhibition
and more. It was suggested that there be two separate meetings, one for staff
and one for the general public. Nancy
will keep the Board informed on the development of the meetings.

Volunteer schedule
Carol
Aupperle explained the location of the booth will be under the trees at Old Cary
Elementary School. This
will be
a good location because there will be shade and the bus traffic will come right
past the booth. Nancy
