Nancy distributed the handout with charts and graphs showing the feedback as to date of the surveys.  Carl Regutti explained one of the things he learned from Lazy Daze was that kids were interested in the model.  Carl also discovered people in general are not sure how to view the piece.  Nancy explained Rajash Patel had made the CD for people to get a better understanding of walking through the piece.  Marla Dorrel said the CD was hard to see outside.  Barbara Petty explained people she spoke with asked about a park setting and seating.  Barbara felt these were valid points.  Julia Kunkel Morrison said there should be seating.  Carl felt there should be interactive things at the site since the design reflects on Cary ’s image.  Maril asked if interactive items were discussed with the artist.  Nancy said this had been discussed with the artist, but was not included in the budget.    Nancy explained a list of potential usages for the corner site has been discussed (see below).

Carol Aupperle said some people she has talked with would like to see a fountain.  Marla Dorrel explained people often think government areas need a fountain, but they are also concerned when there are water shortages.  Marla felt that this project evokes feelings and this is good.  Barbara Petty asked Marla if she feels the focus is for people to understand the piece.  Marla said she does not expect everyone to understand the piece.  She feels the corner as it currently looks is lost, but if this piece is added it will bring life to that area.

Nancy explained all the findings will be presented to Council for their review.  Carl felt things that go before Council are not reported back to the Board.  Nancy said that these are reflected in Council agendas and minutes on the web, but that she will keep the Board abreast of when items like this come before Council.  Julia Kunkel Morrison suggested the Board Members go to Council meetings when there are public art agenda items. Marla reminded Board members that they could contact Council members and offer to meet with them to answer questions they may have.

Sign up for assistance to accompany display and presentations with civic groups

Nancy discussed needing help with tomorrow nights Town Council meeting.  She explained the meeting will be held at the Herbert C. Young Community Center at 6:00 pm .  Marla Dorrel explained there will be four public hearings on the agenda.  Nancy will email everyone with times and dates to sign up.

Nancy explained that feedback from homeowners associations would be good. If any one has knowledge or would like for this to be presented to their homeowners association, please contact Nancy.  Meril Yeske asked that the October 5th sculpture walk be added to this list of meetings.

 E.    BOARD MEMBERS - REPORTS FROM REPRESENTATIVE ORGANIZATIONS

Cary Visual Art –

 No report was given.

Nancy Novell distributed a handout about the Downtown Cary Sculpture Walk scheduled for October 5,
         5:00 – 7:30pm .

         Nancy
explained Laura Coats has requested that the Board consider an extension of the dates for Sky
Sentinel until August 2005.  Maril Yeske said that the CVA board had not voted on this yet.  Carol Aupperle
felt that CVA should talk with shop owners in the area of where the sculpture stands.  Carol expressed
her concerns about extending the stay of the temporary sculpture for another year.  In 2003, PAAB had
taken action on recommending the sculpture as temporary for one year.  Carol stated that if the Board
reneges on its action, the public might not trust the Board for going back on their word and agreeing to
leave the pieces in place for another year.  It would be like breaking a promise.  Carl Regutti brought up
safety and security issues, citing the structural problems already encountered with the deterioration at
         the base of the sculpture.

MOTION:   Barbara Petty recommended declining CVA’s offer to keep Sky Sentinel in place for another year.  Julia          Kunkel Morrison seconded.

ACTION:    The motion passed unanimously.

Lyman Collins explained staff will report this action to Cary Visual Arts.
