The Public Art Advisory Board (PAAB) consists of 9 citizen volunteers from within the Town’s corporate limits. The PAAB provides representation for Cary citizens in partnership with the Cultural Arts Division of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department in promoting understanding, appreciation, support and involvement in the Town’s public art program.  Committed to the highest aesthetic standards and broadest involvement of citizens and artists, the board provides advice and recommendations to Town council and staff on matters relating to the administration, acquisition and inclusion of public artworks in Cary .  The board conducted 10 regular meetings, 9 artist selection panel meetings and 1 special meeting in 2006.  

Highlights of the board’s actions for 2006 follow:

The board made recommendations on the following items:

  • Public artist for US 1/64 Pedestrian Greenway Bridge project – 79 artists from across the US and Canada applied.  All 79 were reviewed, 5 were invited to submit proposals and models.
  • Public artist for the Cary Dog Park project -  A Statewide call to artists for proposals utilizing surplus fire hydrants.  Two artists were invited for interviews.
  • Public artist for the design team for the Walnut Street Park project -  4 artists were interviewed after a limited call to pre-qualified lists of national artists.
  • Town Hall Campus public art project – PAAB continues to review public art opportunities for the Town Hall Campus project.
  • Inclusion of public art priorities for the Streetscape Master Plan – PAAB developed strategic priorities for the inclusion of integrated public art as part of the Streetscape Master Plan.
  • Inclusion of Public Artist for the Downtown Cary Streetscape design team – 59 artists from across the US and Canada have applied and are in the process of being reviewed for hiring for the design/engineering team
  • Gift of sculpture from Cary Visual Art for the Stone Creek Village round-a-bout
  • Gifts of 3 paintings from Cary Visual Art for Town Hall

 

Additional highlights of the Board’s activities for 2006 include the following:

  • Collected citizen comments on pedestrian greenway bridge models – over a 4+ week period the models for the greenway pedestrian bridge were on public display on the Town’s Web site and at Town Hall, Downtown Public Library, Cary Town Centre Mall, and Cary Senior Center .  During that period the PAAB members collected 162 comments from citizens.
  • Collected citizen feedback on park priorities and downtown streetscape priorities – this information formed the PAAB’s goal setting process for Walnut Street Park and Downtown Cary Streetscape. 
  • Provided outreach to community groups and citizens on the Town’s public art projects at Lazy Daze and Spring Daze Festivals, CVA’s Art Crawl, Friends of Page-Walker, and Cary Visual Art, Inc.
  • PAAB members provided leadership by chairing and membership on three artist selection panels
  • Goal setting for the Public Art Advisory Board – ongoing review and evaluation of goals
