Greetings Mrs. Gray and members of the Cary Town Council:
My name is Heather Morell and I have been a proud citizen of Cary for two years. Since moving to Cary from Raleigh, I have continued to be impressed with the environmental efforts that Cary has made and has endeavored to make in the future. When I heard of the opportunity to be involved in this commitment to community sustainability I jumped at the chance.
I am applying to become a Citizen At Large representative and I wanted to give you a brief description of my background and perspective to help evaluate if I would be a good fit for the Environmental Advisory Board.
My degree is from North Carolina State University in Environmental Science and I am currently employed at the University in their Environmental Analysis Laboratory as a Research Specialist. I support numerous cutting edge departmental projects that focus on everything from stream restoration to green roof rainwater to biofuels to animal waste management. Being surrounded by the latest in environmental research provides me with a perspective about current environmental issues and potential solutions to the problems.
In addition to my professional interests, I also serve as a volunteer for Cary’s Environmental Block Leader program, a grassroots effort to educate the community on water conservation initiatives. Additionally, I am a citizen volunteer for the Neuse River Foundations’ Muddy Water Watch Program, which trains citizens to assist in identifying potential sources of sedimentation into surface waters.
At NCSU, I was involved with the Sustainability Coalition for several years. This was a highly collaborative group of faculty, staff and students that came together to assess our baseline campus sustainability, develop our mission statement, map goals for the future and develop initiatives to achieve those goals. Serving with this group was immensely instructive at the benefits of interdepartmental coordination and how to approach such a multi faceted issue such as community environmental sustainability.
I believe in the Town of Cary’s commitment to environmental stewardship and would welcome the opportunity to be an immediate part of that future vision. Environmental concerns have truly been brought to the forefront recently, especially with the drought and continued rise in development. Large portions of the citizenry seem to be concerned about our environment and it is a wonderfully ripe time to take our commitment to sustainability to the next level.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Heather Morell
