The H.W. Kueffner Award is
presented annually by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Public Works
Association to recognize individuals who are employed in public works in a
position below the supervisory level for outstanding achievement in local
government service.
The
following is an excerpt from the nomination form lauding Mr. Smith’s
accomplishments:
The
nominee is very highly regarded by his peers, the sewer customers he regulates,
contractors, engineers, architects, plumbers, planners, and colleagues with whom
he is associated. He represents the
highest level of personal professionalism and a commitment for excellence in
every aspect of his career. His
position is very visible in the public as well as governmental and educational
arena. Many telephone calls are
received by his supervisor commending the nominee’s sense and presence of
competency, topic awareness, fairness, technical accuracy, and overall thorough
understanding of whatever environmental topic is being discussed, considered or
acted upon. The nominee is very
honest and forthright in his professional interactions with all who work with
him, in any capacity. He works very
well with all other departments within the Town of
