Joint Meeting Between the Wake County Board Of Education
and Cary, Fuquay-Varina, and Morrisville Town Councils
Webster Center , Crossroads II – Room 1320

Board of Education Members Present: Chair Rosa Gill, Board Members Beverley Clark, Eleanor Goettee, Patti Head, Kevin Hill, Ron Margiotta, Anne McLaurin, Lori Millberg, Horace Tart

Cary Members Present: Mayor Harold Weinbrecht, Council Members Gale Adcock, Don Frantz, Ervin Portman, Jennifer Robinson, Jack Smith

Cary Members Absent: Mayor Pro Tem Julie Robison

Fuquay-Varina Members Present: Commissioner Charlie Adcock

Morrisville Members Present: Mayor Jan Faulkner, Commissioners Liz Johnson, Linda Lyons, Pete Martin, Tom Murry, Mike Snyder

The joint meeting of the Wake County Board of Education and the Town Councils for Cary, Fuquay-Varina, and Morrisville was called to order at 5:34 p.m. by Board of Education Chair Rosa Gill. Chair Gill thanked all present for their attendance. Town mayors introduced themselves and their towns’ council members.

Don Haydon, Chief Facilities & Operations Officer for Wake County Public School System, presented an update on the CIP 2006 building program. CIP 2006 provided the following:
• 17 new schools,
• 13 major renovations,
• Land for 13 future schools,
• Life cycle repair projects, and
• Technology.

Mr. Haydon also gave a brief overview of a handout listing the ten step land acquisition site selection process. The steps include:
• Identification of circles,
• Preliminary study of circles,
• Coordination with municipal and county staff,
• Identification of best site,
• Negotiation of contract to purchase,
• Appraisal,
• Board of Education approval,
• Due diligence,
• Board of Commissioners’ approval, and
• Closing on property.

Numerous questions and ample discussion took place during Mr. Haydon’s presentation. The questions and issues discussed were related to:
• Number of mobile classrooms,
• New schools opening and reassignment,
• Agree on Board of Education having taxing authority,
• At-large elections for School Board members,
• Agree on land banking,
• Future land availability,
• Possibility of a multiple choice bond,
• Where should the money go, facilities or student performance, and
• Neighborhood schools and diversity.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:56 p.m.
