Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Advisory Board
The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Advisory Board’s mission is to provide representation for the citizens of Cary in partnership with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department and the Town Council in promoting understanding, appreciation, participation and support for open spaces, parks, recreational opportunities, cultural activities, programs and facilities.
Life Span Statement
The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Advisory Board is a standing board, which meets monthly. Board members will reexamine their purpose every three years beginning in 2013.
The mission of the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Advisory Board is to provide representation for the citizens of Cary in partnership with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department and the Town Council in promoting understanding, appreciation, participation and support for open spaces, parks, recreational opportunities, cultural activities, programs and facilities.
Membership
The Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Advisory Board consists of ten members appointed by the Town Council, one of whom the Town Council designates as chairperson. Members are appointed from within Cary's corporate limits. All appointments to the board are for three-year terms, except where unexpired terms are being filled.
Goals/Work Plan
1. As specified in Section 8 of the LDO, review and make recommendations related to the recreation land dedication/payment in lieu requirement for each residential development plan submittal.
2. Review, comment, and make recommendations as necessary related to PRCR policies, initiatives and capital projects brought forward by staff. Appoint Board members to serve as liaisons on design committees for capital projects.
3. Interface with other citizens for input: 1) formally, the Public Speaks Out portion of the agenda serves as a conduit for citizen input related to Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources’ initiatives; 2) board members reach out to neighbors and other community contacts to seek input.
4. Collaborate as necessary with the three Board committees (Athletics, Cultural Arts and Greenways) relative to current issues and initiatives.
5. Provide volunteer support for PRCR programs/events.
6. Develop, implement, and track donations for funding the scholarship program.
7. Actively participate, review, and make recommendations related to the update of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Master Plan.
8. Provide ongoing input and guidance on issues relating to open space protection, historic preservation and environmental sustainability, and communicate the Board’s goals to other Town boards.
9. Work collaboratively as needed with other Town appointed Boards on those issues related to the mission of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.
Evaluation Criteria: The board will periodically review and evaluate effectiveness of their work plan, modifying as needed to meet goals.
Meetings
The board meets as follows at 5:15 p.m. in Conference Room #11130, 316 N. Academy St., Cary (requires approximately two hours per month for the monthly meetings; members may also be expected to volunteer time at major festivals and events, attend public meetings, cultural arts events, regulary visit parks and greenways, and serve on or chair committees and subcommittees)

How do I Apply?
Applications are accepted each year from May 1 through June 30 for upcoming vacancies. Applicants applying for this board are required to complete a supplemental application. Current Town of Cary employees are not eligible to volunteer.
