Sign Ordinance Evaluation Task Force
Background
Town Council members and staff received numerous suggestions for modifications to the Cary Sign Ordinance. At its July 23, 2009 meeting, the Cary Town Council directed staff to initiate a comprehensive evaluation of Cary’s Sign Ordinance, paying particular attention to the effects of the present regulations considering the current economic condition. A Task Force representing both Cary citizens and business owners was appointed by the council on October 22, 2009.

The Sign Task Force and the Town of Cary conducted a survey regarding Cary's existing regulations and potential amendments to the Town's sign regulations. The survey ran throughout the month of January.

Purpose
The objective of the task force is to conduct an in-depth review of the current Town of Cary Sign Ordinance and evaluate the regulations to ensure that signs are both compatible with the high quality aesthetic image the Town seeks and effective communication and marketing tools for the business community. Task force members will participate equally in providing feedback on current regulations and offering input as to whether or not modifications to these regulations should be considered. The members will be asked to provide their perspective on all aspects of the ordinance, consider alternate perspectives, and review feedback from the community. The findings of the task force will be presented to the Cary Town Council in the spring of 2010 and possible ordinance amendments may be considered at that time.
Key Objectives:
- Evaluate current regulations for clarity, consistency and intent
- Review input from citizens and the business community
- Identify and discuss recent industry or economic trends that may impact signage
- Consider appropriate amendments in light of the evaluation findings
