Overview

The North Carolina Turnpike Authority, a division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), is beginning construction on the Triangle Expressway, the state's first modern toll road located in Wake and Durham counties designed to improve commuter mobility, accessibility, and connectivity to western Wake County and Research Triangle Park while reducing congestion on the existing north-south routes that serve the Triangle.

Western Wake Freeway

The
Western Wake Freeway portion of the Triangle Expressway will span 12.6 miles, starting at the existing NC-540 in western Wake County south of I-40 to NC 55 Bypass in Holly Springs. The north section from Hwy 55 to US 64 is expected to open in August 2012. The overall project is expected to be open in December 2012.

Impact on Cary

White Oak Greenway
Due to the construction of the Western Wake Freeway, the Town temporarily closed the central section of the White Oak Greenway effective March 15, 2010. This
450-foot section of trail is in the middle of the recently completed 2-mile stretch of the White Oak Creek Greenway between NC Highway 55 and Green Level Church Road. It is scheduled to reopen in August 2012. All other parts of the greenway will remain open. There will be no detours or alternate connections between the two ends of the trail.

Southeast Connector - Triangle Expressway Extension
Status: Officially on hold since March 2011

The Southeast Connector will extend the Triangle Expressway and complete the Raleigh Outer Loop. It will span almost 30 miles and link the towns of Clayton, Garner, Fuquay Varina, Holly Springs, Apex, Cary, and Raleigh. It will also connect major roadways and ease congestion on the beltline (I-440), I-40, NC 42, NC 55, and Ten-Ten Road.

Impact on Cary
Planning studies for the Southeast Connector are currently underway. The NCTA has asked the Town of Cary and other local representatives and municipalities to identify potential concerns that should be considered during the study process. View Cary's staff-identified comments in the
