Cary, NC – Weather permitting, CSX Transportation will implement rolling closures of seven railroad crossings in Cary starting at 9 p.m. January 15 through the evening of January 19. CSX crews will begin work near North Academy Street near East Cedar Street, moving four miles west toward Apex and ending at Laura Duncan Road. The continuous closures are necessary to allow CSX to complete railroad maintenance work overnight and asphalt repairs during the day.
“Understanding the vital role these streets play for our business owners and residents, we have requested that CSX work to reopen each crossing as quickly as possible to minimize the number of simultaneous closings.” said Robert Shultes, Transportation Engineer. As crossings reopen, Cary will update the Town of Cary Traffic Twitter feed @TOC_Traffic until all work is complete.
Specifically, the railroad crossings at North Academy Street and North Harrison Avenue near the Cary Depot, North Dixon Street near West Chatham Street, Old Apex Road near Murphy Drive and High House Road near Old Apex Road are anticipated to be closed starting at 9 p.m. January 15 through January 18. The crossings at SW Maynard Road near Old Apex Road and Laura Duncan Road near Old Apex Road are anticipated to be closed 11 p.m. January 18 through the evening of January 19. Heavy delays are expected; drivers are asked to avoid the area and follow local detour signage. To detour all closures, drivers should use the Maynard Loop and Cary Parkway.
Local Detour Information
Drivers traveling around North Dixon Avenue should head east on Holloway and Hillsboro streets before heading north on North Harrison Avenue to access the detour along Chapel Hill Road to East Durham Road back to East Chatham Street. Those traveling around North Harrison Avenue and North Academy Street should also use East Durham Road as a detour. When driving around Old Apex Road, High House Road and SW Maynard Road, drivers are encouraged to use West Chatham Street as an alternate route, and those traveling around Laura Duncan Road should use North Salem Street and U.S. 64. Impacted GoCary routes will be rerouted as necessary.
