CARY, N.C. (December 8, 2017) – The Cary Theater today announced the launch of BEYOND: The Film Festival, its signature independent film competition and festival, which will premiere June 14-17, 2018, in downtown Cary, N.C. This bustling art house theater was originally built in 1946 and revived by the Town in 2014 to become a gathering place for classic, repertory, independent and documentary films. BEYOND: The Film Festival will celebrate the many facets of the art of storytelling through film and establish The Cary’s namesake competition and festival.

Over four days, The Cary Theater will bring together the local community and beyond to experience the best films from independent filmmakers that have not yet been screened to the masses. BEYOND will feature short films in competition, coupled with invited feature-length films, to highlight all aspects of filmmaking, from screenwriting to cinematography to costume design, and more. Each year, the festival will explore a unique theme for all submissions as well as focus on a key facet of the filmmaking process.

For the premiere in 2018, BEYOND will feature short films (30 minutes or shorter) in all genres focusing on the theme of “Hometown Stories.” Awards will be presented within the categories: Official Selection, Grand Jury and People’s Choice. The festival will also feature a screenplay competition with the same Hometown Stories theme for its inaugural year. The winning screenplay will receive a table read at the festival.

“We’re excited to expand our programming repertoire and unveil our film festival to screen the best global films you’ve never seen for the Cary community,” said Joy Ennis, Operations & Programming Supervisor for The Cary Theater. “We will honor the art of storytelling through the medium of film by screening completed films but also by highlighting many behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking, starting with the screenplay.”

Those interested in submitting a short film or screenplay can do so through the FilmFreeway portal on The Cary Theater’s website. Early bird submissions are due January 16, 2018. Last call submissions are due February 16, 2018.
