K9 Program
A human-canine officer team is a tried and true law enforcement tool. With their keen eyesight, speed and sense of smell, police dogs can perform some tasks faster and at lower cost than human officers with less risk to officers and the public.
The Town of Cary has formed a K9 officer program, and works with other police departments in the area who have agreed to share their teams.
Cary police use their K9 team to track lost persons or fleeing suspects, search for discarded or hidden evidence or contraband, detect illegal drugs, search buildings and help protect officers. Cary’s K9 team is available for public appearances and demonstrations as well.
Seth & Enzo
In March 2010, K9 Enzo graduated from a 12-week K9 training program n Chapel Hill, NC. K9 Enzo is a solid black German Shepherd from the Czech Republic. Master Officer Seth Everett and Enzo work weekends to provide K9 coverage for the Town of Cary and its citizens.
Scott & Tayber
In October 2010, K9 Tayber graduated from a 14-week training program in Raleigh, NC. K9 Tayber is a German Shepherd that, along with Police Officer II Scott McInerny, was selected as the Cary Police Department's third K9 team.
Phil & Robby
K9 Robby is a long hair, black and tan German shepherd from the Czech Republic. Police Officer Phil Humphries was a K9 handler in the United States Air Force before coming to Cary and also has experience as a K9 trainer and Kennel Master
Keeping Enzo, Tayber, and Robby Safe
To keep Enzo, Tayber, and Robby safe while they’re riding, the Town's police cars have a kennel insert in the back seat. This helps protect in case of a crash. If the temperature inside the car rises above 90 degrees, a fan turns on automatically and the window rolls down. A key chain alarm alerts the officers. The kennel insert has a spill-proof water bowl and room for Max, Enzo and Tayber to move around.
People can help Max, Tayber and Enzo concentrate on their job by not approaching them or trying to pet them while they are working.
Meeting Our K9s
Want to schedule a time when one of the Town’s K9 teams can meet with your school or civic group? They are available to meet and provide a demonstration of their abilities.
