Marcy Holland

2009 Hometown Spirit Award Nominee:
Marcy Holland

Nominated by: Elizabeth Snively and Kathy Fails, who both state on the nomination form:

“We would like to nominate Marcy Holland for the Hometown Spirit Award. With her friendly nature, desire to help others, and natural leadership, Marcy has brought many people together for charity projects, good works, and get-togethers. Marcy is the type of person who knows everybody, and everybody knows Marcy. She can always be relied on for helpful information, is nonjudgmental and neighborly to all, and follows through with the effort needed to turn ideas into actions.

Here are some examples:

  • While her two children attended Northwoods Elementary, Marcy was very active with the PTA. She chaired the staff appreciation committee and co-organized the science fair. This year, she is on the board of the West Cary PTSA, where she serves as VP of Parent Involvement.
  • During the Christmas season, Marcy organizes a family adoption through Wake County Health and Human Services. Marcy finds out the family’s details and helps our neighborhood gather, wrap, and deliver appropriate gifts and food for the family in need. She follows the family throughout the year and coordinates additional donations.
  • Marcy and her family volunteer monthly at the Ronald McDonald House and/or Stand Up For Kids.
  • Marcy hosts a group of about 10-15 people from her church, East Triangle Church of Christ, at her house weekly.
  • In her career, Marcy works as a physical therapist for Rex Home Health Services, seeing homebound patients and providing them with the skills and exercises needed to become more independent.
  • Marcy recently took up running and participated in the Magnificent Mile race, which benefited research for motor neuron disease.
  • Marcy organizes our neighborhood block parties and cookouts. She also organizes a monthly Bunco group for neighborhood ladies.
  • Marcy and her kids are a fixture at the Silverton pool every summer, where they participate in the Silverton Sharks swim team.
  • Marcy keeps her home up-to-date and well-maintained, inside and out, setting an example for the neighborhood.

In addition, Marcy is simply a very nice person who will not just wave hello if she sees you on the street but will stop her car to chat and catch up on neighborhood news. She truly cares about what is going on in the neighborhood, and many ask her advice or opinion because of her practical, down-to-earth, can-do attitude.

Marcy comes from a large family that places a high priority on helping others and volunteering. She has carried on this spirit even in a time when most people are too busy to reach out to others. For this reason, we feel it is important to recognize Marcy Holland with this nomination so that others will take from her example and have the inspiration to be as positive a force in their communities as she is.”
