GIS FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about GIS
1. What Is GIS (Geographic Information System)?
Non-Technical Definition of GIS
GIS involves maps and information about the maps. A GIS consists of computer hardware, software, data, and personnel to run the system.
Technical Definition of GIS
A GIS is a collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information.
A GIS is an invaluable tool for viewing and analyzing data. Over eighty percent of decisions made by local government are constrained, influenced, or dictated by some fact of geography. One of the most powerful features of geographic analysis is the ability to compare different layers of information.
A GIS can provide unique insight into many difficult problems:
- Location - What is at a particular location? Who is the property owner of 316 N. Academy Street?
- Location - What is at a particular location? Who is the property owner of 316 N. Academy Street?
- Condition - What is the condition of a location? What is the zoning of 316 N. Academy Street?
- Trend - What has changed over a period of time? Where has the Town of Cary experienced growth over the last 2 years?
- Routing - What is the best way to deliver something? The routing question requires the calculation of the best route between locations (the easiest, quickest, shortest route, etc.). For example, what are the optimal routes for collecting recycled materials in Cary?
- Pattern - What spatial pattern exists? Where have robberies decreased in Cary over the last year?
- Modeling - What if something changes? What happens if the Town of Cary implements a reuse water system?
